Saw that too and though it was very sad - it's one thing to buy a few cards and paper in the sale but to do all the presents before you've taken the previous year's tree down is just wrong!!!!!

I just hate all that commercialism of Christmas and have cut out as much of it as I can. But the way things are, in future years might just take off for warmer climes in a well organised Muslim country where it can all be ignored. Tunisia might do the job.

Only 357 days now!

Christmas comes but once a year
and when it's gone I'm glad.

(I'm just never very sure when it's ended or when it starts again)

Thanks for starting this one Nick, I suppose someone had to!

I hate the way Christmas is now, commercialised and fake (not that I'm religious) but there is so much pressure for everyone to spend loads of money, buy more food than they can eat, buy pressies that are "the best" instead of putting a little thought into what people would really like.

The Christmasses I used to enjoy were when my children were little, quite simple cos we didn't have much money, but happy family times and everyone was very grateful for what they got. The children used to make decorations for the tree and the rooms. Nowadays if it isn't the "in" designer label or "must have" item (decided by the marketing gurus) whatever you give seems to be looked down on - and how many people create financial problems for themselves by borrowing to give what is expected rather than what they can actually afford to give/do?

Sorry everyone, rant over, but I do wish we could go back to the old values

Thanks Rustylady, my sentiments exactly and I'm sure shared by a few more. I don't do all that stuff, I just do Christmas my way. I think more and more people are finding the courage to do the same.

I agree with the sentiments expressed on here, but have been very sad deciding what I am going to make as gifts for next Christmas.

I only hope the intended recipients are alcoholic sweet eaters

This (last!?) year I made my family a selection of cookies, shortbread and mince pies, a jar of jam/chutney and bought them all a bottle of wine.
I have since been told that most of it didn't last five minutes before it was scoffed, so next year they are getting the same again.
When any of my lot visit they tend to raid the jam stores before they go home anyway!

Kirsty

Oh Dear, we still seem to be hung up on the idea that Christmas is all about the commercial idea of spending money and giving presents - the more expensive the better - and whatever you give it will never be enough.
Don't want to go into the ideology of it -- or the debate between Christmas and the ideology of New Year BUT
if you see it as essentially a family time, what is wrong with making your family treat to everyone the hosting of a meal and family evening
it could be in your own home if you have the resources
the local indian restaurant if you can afford it
the village hall with sausage rolls and sandwiches.
Just a chance for families to get together without a wedding or funeral
Just something for everyone to enjoy
And all hosted and paid for by you, at whatever level you can afford to do it.
No more expensive than whatever you spent on whatever those unwanted gifts were
Just a thought .
What do others think ?
