  • Just sniffed a rancid chicken breast!

I cannot get the smell out of my nostrils.

It was in a tub in the fridge, can only be a day or two passed its best, but that faint rancid smell is permeating my nassal passages.

The only other smell anything like as repulsive is gone-off potatoes.

Interestingly- where did you buy it?...some shops are well within the 'Ukk date' whilst others are so very very close

Was probably Tesco. Really can't remember how long ago, but it can't have been long out of date.

UK Waitrose are great sticklers for not reducing the goods till the very last moment. I am probably about to open a hornets nest here but is hanging game and foul really that injurous to health.

Give your smelly chicken a good salt bath. Stick it an hot oven and enjoy. If you feel poorly tomorrow it's probably something ate.

There is quite a difference between 'hanging' game, and something going off in a dish or plastic bag in the fridge. It's to do with humidity and air movement.....

I've got some goose breasts in the freezer that smell minging! Once cooked though they smell like roast pork! (Got no fancy for rancid chicken though!)

I thought rancid was decomposition...also smelly. Does it also mean unfit for consumption

Ewww, yeah. I once ate a boiled egg when I had a cold. Think it was fine, but the limited taste sensation caused a disgusting fragrance while I was chewing it. My advice: Never eat a boiled egg with a cold!

Rotten, forgotten liver! Now that would beat a gone-off chicken breast. Seriously, chew a sprig of parsley, that'll get rid of the problem.
