Anyone got one? What's the "actual" battery life like? The original powerbook I had was quoted I think at 7 hrs, but was more so 5 odd with actual use.

Fathers day is coming up, and I think my daughter needs to treat me or something Mrs won't be pleased, but isn't it great that work let us take their new ipads home for "testing" software...

So yeah, quite tempted. Am aware it's a big ipod, but have a couple ideas for apps that just wouldn't work on the iphone/touch due to the screen size.

Based on the way Apple controls every little thing and locks out developers I won't be getting one any time soon. Their previous products show the trend -
Ipod - you have to use Itunes - any other mp3 player its a simple drag and drop .
I phone - you can't even change a battery without sending it away, bluetooth only works with Apple selected and approved devices, the gps accuracy is terrible. Flash player - the industry "standard" is not supported .
Like Z says - sit back and wait for V2 - at least then you will know what will and what won't work with it.

Do you want it just because its the latest toy from Apple and all the so called "cool " peope will be queuing up like sheep to get it ? Remember the iphone - when market volume didn't materialise they cut the price and dumped it on the market to "claim " market share .

What will it do that your laptop won't? I'd suggest a good well speced laptop will be more versatile and useful than the Ipad.
There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who won't anymore and who always will. Don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it in your future.

Even an underspeced laptop will do more than a IPISS (Apple laughing all the way to the bank) sorry IPAD.

PS IPOD will also synch to MediaMonkey coz thats what the OH uses instead of that POS Itunes

PPS No I am not a MAC hater, they are a nice piece of kit

I've heard they are the latest thing, but what exactly do they DO?

Am I going to have to get off my bum and look this thing up to find out?

Have already got a laptop which has a better sized screen, can listen to music on other more portable products and don't feel the need but as I've said before I'm not a gadget person so not really the target market. For me it'd be a total waste of money but can bet that my brother will buy one before the year is out as he's a mug for anything new with a large price tag

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I don't use itunes for my iphone, or ipod (albeit, I do for backups/restores - when I recently bricked my phone trying to install 'non supported' software).. was glad I did turn back to itunes for that one!

I use SharePod for my music transfering.

Besides, there's talk of a Windows based development environment.. initially it was thought that VS would be able to support it..

There's nothing wrong with normal laptops. I tend to quickly check say these forums, or my email on my phone rather than getting out the laptop, and then finding that the mrs hasn't charged it up, there's also the fact that I have an idea for a game that would be really suited to a large ipod/iphone type device.

I'm not an apple geek or anything, but I've used their stuff right back from the first powerbook at uni as I was sick of messing around with unix/linux to get things working for my dissertation - when darwin just worked out of the box Infact, I still hvae that powerbook now, the only thing that needed replacing was the power supply - but after 7 odd years that's nothing. I've had countless other laptops in that time - probably 5/6?

I was a bit dissapointed at it running the iphone os though - a cutdown versionof os x would have been great.. i suppose it was a great move from apples marketing bods (ala the old cut/copy/paste jobby).

I'd like to wait for the 2nd rev too zaz, we'll see. I've dropped the hints, I just hope my daughter has deep pockets!
