  • I'm a broken woman

Last Friday I completed my first WK1 of C25K - Saturday I went shopping* and bought 'stuff', like shorts, karimoor, socks, HRM, etc etc - BUT I couldn't even walk on Sunday, my back is still in a very stiff locked kinda way.

I have had back issues in the past but they appeared to be long gone It is stiff and feels like a lot of inflammation going on.

Question 1 - is this possibly due to running? I was running around a field which had uneven surfaces, which caused me to slip at one point - probably wasn't a great idea!

Question 2 - does anyone else cope with running whilst managing a back issue?

The irony of all this - remember the patio I dug up and all the slabs and bags of sand that I humped, without so much as a twinge I may have to stick to cross-trainer, so please someone tell me they run with a back issue!

*I hate hate hate shopping but enjoyed buying stuff for my next run, which hasn't yet happened

I used to run, not far, only about 30 mins a morning. My lower back has always been a bit 'clicky', but strangely enough it hurts when walking more than when running, no idea why that would be.

However, since I got hit by a car last year, landing hard on my bum, I have been unable to run at all. I tried it once, 6 months after crash and was laid up for 3 days. I couldn't even get up the stairs.

I've been scared to try it again since, but I really want to. I might try again, shall we egg each other on? Here's a linky: http://www.backpainexpert.co.uk/can-...back-pain.html which says to try running on softer surfaces: level grass, treadmill, damp sandy beach etc. Cycle lanes are bouncier than concrete footpaths too.

Grass verges are the worst: full of potholes and hummocks (and dog doos)

Have you got good shoes? Asics, New Balance, Saucony etc?

Yep - deffo, I could really use the help and support!

I am really missing it even though I only completed the first week, I did used to run many years ago and was thrilled to find I wanted to do it again.

I shall resume Wk 1 of C25K again first but probably not until at least next week - in the meantime it'll be cross-trainer and core work for me.

I've got 3 Asics, I love 'em. Don't know what style, I get old season styles for half price.

New Balance are the British ones, but I can't get them affordable enough.

If it helps, Mrs BM has taken up running & has just done her 1st 5k and is doing another this saturday. She has had some & still receives great advice along with a personal virtual trainer on this forum Runners Forum - UK Running Forum. She has a lot of trouble with her knees due to having no cartledge so was advised to go to a shop called "Up & Running" who will put you on a treadmill and look at your gait on a computer then sell you shoes specific to the way you run. Mrs BM has been really pleased with hers. Hope this helps & I can empathise with your bad back. I have taken up cycling which is helping me as it is stregnthening my abs therefore helping my back. Good luck.

Hope it eases for you soon Pisk

My physio has told me not to run again til I have sorted my back isses more. She said when I land I am not landing in the correct 'neutral' position and am therefore not helping the original problem (which is over-bendy spine), and putting more strain on the wrong muscles.

Don't care what it says on there, since I've strengthened my core strength I've had much better balance and less pain in other joints as I've had better posture too.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Hope you're feeling a bit better now Piskie. O.H. has had a bad back for years, he had manipulation & an operation about 30 years ago & has intermittent problems. He swims to strengthen his back as that's not a weightbearing exercise & only runs on a treadmill/cross trainer other than that, running on a road tends to be too jarring. I'd just stick to a treadmill or similar for now & check with your doctor before taking on any long runs.

I have run for the past 32 years (!) and have run with back pain and cracked ribs..

The first 5 minutes are the worst.. then the pain subsides- if you start gently...

What I don't do is run with injured leg muscles: that makes them worse..

Ditto. I read the report and gathered that if you don't do the "core contraction" properly, you do more harm than good.
If you contract your core ab muscles correctly, it's OK. Again, another case of 'banning' something because the majority do it incorrectly

I didn't have a bad back until I started running. It subsided eventually and I think it was because of my posture which until I started running had been stooped with shoulders forward. The running eventually improved my posture and it was this 'chest out' stance that initially gave me the back pain.

Piskie, Hon, running is for Greyhounds and Racehorses. Not peeps built like me and thee!

However, if you insist on partaking of the torture, I hope you manage to sort out you problems, and enjoy your running.

I'm only jealous - I'd love to be able to run, sadly, I'm more waddle than anything else.
