Default If You Had £20 Burning A Hole In Your Pocket?

Hello again

As I mentioned in my last post it was my birthday yesterday.

My wife bought me a subscription to GYO
My Mum bought me 2 blackcurrant plants a gooseberry plant and a damson
My Mother In Law bought me a wind up torch and £20 to spend on the garden.

I've already planted:

Blackberries
Strawberries
Raspberries
Red Currants
Rhubarb
3 X Apple Trees
1 X Pear Tree
1 X Plum Tree
Broad Beans
Turnips
Onions
Garlic
Spring Onions
Spinach

I have my potato's sprouting in the shed and all the seeds I think I'll need for my first year. My plot is quite small but I'd like to buy somthing that will last a good while and be productive for the garden kitchen. Check out the link if you've not seen my garden and give me some advice about what to buy if you would be so kind.

Hello All (New Chap)

Regards, Ian

Sounds interesting especially as we're going to IKEA tomorrow anyway. 'er indoors has decided she wants to make her own pasta from our own chicken's eggs so she needs a pasta machine and of course more bloody jars for god knows what. I'm off to look for this tips list. Thanks.

Pasta.....

I've got hens and make my own pasta - which machine is she thinking of and do you own a Kenwood chef? There is an excellent attachment for it that takes all the hard grind out of the job!

We have a food processor (not a posh kenwood chef unfortunately) but she wants one of those chrome windey things for rolling and cutting the pasta.

A mini greenhouse from woolies will cost you £15, then a more robust cover from wilko will cost you £3.99, then a couple of twangly thingies to strap it to something solid will cost a couple of quid.

Hmm. I've just spent your bus fare home, but it's near enough.....

Err... needs an edge to clamp to, such as a table top, and must be clamped tight or it will move. Then needs strong wrists to turn the handle while the other hand is guiding the pasta dough in the top of the rollers and your THIRD hand is guiding the rolled pasta out so that it doesn't crumple and crack.......

But good once you have the knack!

Maybe a tin of yellow or orange paint to inject a little colour to the borders?

I'm afraid the chickens destroy anything colourful in the borders

Don't know where the tips list is, and I can't find anything on the IKEA website. If it's the same as the one I had last year they're tiny and fall apart as soon as they get wet.

Love the chicken pic Rooster, how many times hace I been there...

Maybe you could get something to keep the chickens off the bits where you don't want them? Some chicken wire or other mesh that you could lay on the ground flat where you sow seedlings, that would stop them dustbathing or scratching up the ground.

Or maybe hang onto your £20 until June then buy a few veg plants rather than buy a packet of seed that you'll only use 1 or 2 seeds from - things like courgettes, which are really productive but have a tendency to sprawl a bit. Also, fresh herbs can be bought as plants and make a huge diffrence to the cooking. Growing vertically helps make the most of your space too - runner beans might also be a good choice.
