  • If it ends in a Y...

then you take the Y away and add 'IES'; strawberry=strawberries, raspberry=raspberries. Writing strawberry's or raspberry's implies that something belongs to the strawberry or the raspberry...

And potato doesn't become potato's or potatoe's if you have more than one. It becomes potatoes. Tomato=tomatoes.

    Hope that helps somebody/somebodies...

And money does not become monies it becomes moneys. Similarly trolley does not become trollies, it becomes trolleys. Trollies are something completely different from what you push round a supermarket. They are what you wear under your keks, ie knickers.

It must have been raining for a while now! But thanks for the grammar lesson.......that apostrophe stuff has baffled me since my rather poor early education in the seventies.......

I finally get it.......thanks for the simple explanation.......

        Good luck Sarz.

Do you, like me, go round shops rubbing out apostrophes on their chalkboards?

English is a difficult language, and it's almost impossible to teach to these new generations of children who never actually see the written form: many of our kids don't have any books in the house at all. They write as they speak, and here in Norfolk you tend to leave out most vowels (and most consonants come to think of it).

My Husband now understands the apostrophe rule - it may have something to do with me gobbing on my finger and wiping signs wherever we go. I even peeled off an apostrophe from a stuck-on sign on a trailer once. It was at a car show, and it was selling signs and transfers - you'd think they would know.
