Any of you lovely people got an ice cream maker?
Mummy very kindly gave me hers (never used) its a magimix 1ltr one.
you need to freeze the bowl first!
ice cream did not set well. I followed all of the instructions, but could find no mention of how long to churn it for?
Any help please would be very welcome

I have a Phillips one where you freeze the bowl. You churn the mixture until it is smooth - it starts out quite 'grainy' and gets smoother. I think mine has to run nearly a half-hour to reach that stage but I cannot find the instruction book to check and I haven't used it for a while.

I do remember that the bowl has to be in the freezer for a good 48 hours before it is cold enough to make good ice cream - and the machine must be running when you put the ingredients in the bowl.

Do you need to put the bowl back in the freezer to finish freezing after it has become smooth? Mine melted as soon as I served it :-(

I got given one a number of years ago, think I only used it a couple of times and ended up freecycling it as it wasn't really my thing. Seem to remember reading a few other grapes saying how good they found theirs though.

we have one that you put the bowl in the freezer (ours lives in there now!), it usually runs for about 30+ mins before it sets, one tip my mum gave me was to get all the ingredients cold before you start to make it, seems to work ok when i do this, but have tried just making it on the hoof, not very good results, so guess it's true that your mum is always right

Hi, I've got the Philips one where you freeze the bowl, I like it so much I've got two of them, however not enough hot weather this year for huge amounts of icecream.
It did take a while to get used to it, now I get a bit blase and chuck the stuff in the machine and let it do its stuff. I usually freeze ice cream in individual pots and find that even if it's not that thick after you've finished churning it still freezes all right.
I don't usually make all the fancy icecreams, I use it for turning my fruit into icecream so make icecream with fruit puree, sugar, yoghurt and cream , best one is blackcurrant, closely followed by raspberry.

I've got a magimix one - but it's the one that does the freezing - I'll look in the book - I think it covers both models. Back afer I've nailed the kids to their beds!

The only book I can find is the recipe book..... which just states 'use a chilled bowl' - how useful!

Got loads of recipes though!

Tomato savoury sorbet, anyone?

To get back to the question, the machine you have uses the cold from the pre-frozen bowl to chill the cream down, so the colder the bowl the better the mix will churn; and yes, the mix will be very soft when freshly churned, 15 mins in the freezer will firm it, 30 mins and it will be on the hard side. If you manage to keep a batch over night it will need 15 mins in the fridge or you risk breaking the spoon getting it out!

Thanks Terry, Your Magimix that does the freezing.......is it good? how much can you make at a time?
I was thinking of saving for one of those before this one came along.
I will make another batch then put it into freezer to finish off!
thanks again to you all

The machine I got (mumble mumble years ago) was a pressie to myself on giving up smoking! I put all the money I would have spent in a jar and saved up the £150 or what have you in a couple of months!

My machine, a Gelato Chef 2000, will do up to 1.5 pints of mix at a time - a 6 egg custard if that helps. Then it needs to be left for at least 40 mins to allow the refrigerant to settle before making another batch. 'Proper' vanilla ice cream is always in huge demand!

Not doing my waist bulge any favours!

Terry
