  • How utterly stupid

    How pathetic is this,

I just went to my local shop to get a pack of ciggies, only to be told that as yesterday was national no smoking day, the manager / owner had decided to help the cause ?, and not to sell cigarettes for 2 days.

No real problem as I just popped over to tesco, but seemed a tad extreme to me, not sure but there probably is not much profit in selling them, but he must have lost other business as a result..

I used to work with a non-smoker who always had a ciggie on no-smoking day to show solidarity for us poor bullied smokers.

I can maybe see the point of not selling on No Smoking day, but why 2 days?

Wouldn't bother me if they banned them altogether i don't smoke

But to sell them 363 days a year and stop for two whats the point

Very odd. They would lose trade on that day anyway, why make it worse? If they support no smoking, why not just stop selling entirely? Sounds hypocritical to me!

I sincerely hope he was the owner and not the manager of someone else's investment.

Seems he can't be doing so badly in the credit crunch if he can afford to turn away sales - even for just a day - possiby longer if there were any first time customers dropping by.

To be honest, if he was willing to forego a bit of profit to do his bit towards raising awareness of dangers of smoking etc., I'd be pretty slow to criticize him. Maybe he figured that if he made one person think twice about buying fags and lighting up, it'd be worth it.

                    Just a thought.

Good in theory Rhona, butas someone else said, if he feels like that about it, isn't it hypocriticl to sell the things at all? (and I have never smoked, can't stand the smell, and think the ban totally OTT>)

Most smokers know the dangers of smoking but chose to smoke anyway. Dedicated smokers would just go somewhere else

Ragingly hypocritical, just jumping on the band wagon.

I am a smoker, it is a choice, I heartily resent the powers that be deciding to take that choice away. In the same vein I choose not to drink but I dont insist that anyone else shouldnt. Grrrrrr rant over

As an ex-smoker I think there are plenty of smokers out there who would not smoke if it was only down to choice! Every little helps!

So the OP went somewhere else to buy fags, well thats the free market economy for you - perhaps the shop owner would prefer not to sell fags, but its a tough world and they can't afford to turn down the business...better to have ethics some time than no time.
