Berberis can grow quite quickly. Probably 2-3 feet of new shoot per season. It can become a small tree, I had one that was about 6-7 feet tall and about 4 feet wide. It will probably take 4-5 years to get to a good size IMO and make a fairly impenetrable hedge!

I have made a hedge from Kerria which grows quite quickly and produces nice yellow flowers in the spring, but it's not particularly tall. I quite like beech hedges as they are a lovely shade of green in the spring and then turn into a pale brown in the winter.

Well mine is three years old now and I think it thinks its a bonsai! It has just about made 18 inches tall.

Not all Berberis grow tall - some varieties are compact.

Have a look on here for different varieties: https://vault2.secured-url.com/barns.../Berberis.html

I am growing a hedge from Pyracantha, and another from Escallonia (good plant for windy seaside locations)
