Hi Claire, first wash the jars in soapy water and rinse in clean warm water. Allow them to drip-dry, upside down, on a rack in the oven set to 140C/275F/Gas 1. Leave them there for at least half an hour while you make the jam. What kind of jam are you making?

You need to wash and rinse them well and put them in a roasting tin or similar and put them in a hottish oven (180c) until hot and dry. Be sure they are quite dry though or your jam will go mouldy.

Make sure if the lids have plasic coating stuff inside you pop them in boiling water not oven~have lost many a lid this way myself!

I actually sterilise in the old baby bottle sterilising machine, and dry through in the oven. After they ahve already been throught the dishwasher cycle, I'm a bit obsessive I know but I don't want to find that my efforts are in vain.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

Anything over 110 C will do- 20 mins fine. LIds are best sterilised in Miltons solution.
