  • How do you get rid of yours?

I'm loaded with manflu & dying.............. (ok, a snuffly chesty cold really). I was just wondering if there were any old wives tales you swear by. I always try to sweat it out by wearing lots of layers but not sure if it works or is just in my mind.

That's exactly what my OH does

Personally I just carry on as usual but in a more grumpy sort of way

Feed a cold and starve a fever
        Sweaty sock around neck
Good rub down with goose grease
Whisky and hot water with lemon
        Madras

Just a few from an old wife. It will last seven days with treatment and a week without. Seriously, hope you feel better soon BM - curl up somewhere warm and sleep it off!
Oh - and don't feel sorry for yourself - it makes the symptoms worse for you and anyone else in contact with you!

Same here. Paracetamol for aches, decongestants for stuffy sinuses, tissues for snot, hot toddies for comfort.

Himself: takes to his bed (unless footy is on), moans & whines every 2 mins, refuses to take what I offer (ibuprofen when paracetamol isn't working, goes to Boots and buys 5 boxes of the most expensive "flu" remedy (paracetamol-based ).

An offer of a night out with the boys results in an instantaneous cure. Try that.

If you work out how to cure it please let me know, I've had my cold now for over 3 weeks, it's wiped out 2 and a half weekends and is seriously getting on my nerves now. I have never had a cold to last this long!
It keeps mutating every few days, the past few it's been my in throat and no voice, but have had the full works, the sweats, the green phlegm, the aches, the bunged up nose, the sinus headaches... I wonder what it will turn into next!

OH says if I were a horse they'd have shot me by now... charming LOL

Tomato soup with a few drops of Tabasco sauce in it, soothes the throat, unblocks the nose and makes me feel better

Either that or a hot curry and drink as much water as you can.

i swear by a homemade curry- as hot as you can stand. if you prefer, then have chili. the spices in both of theses have strong anti viral and antibiotic properties, also analgesic. plus, they make you sweat, and acts as a decongestant. onions are good, as is garlic and lemon so get as much of those into your diet. if you have a sore throat, mash a half a bulb of garlic into a jar of honey ( you will have to take a bit of honey out of the jar, to make room for the garlic) let it set for a few days in the fridge, before using. lasts for ages. this soothes a sore throat and boosts your immune system. and drink loads of hot fresh lemon juice, with cinnimon and ginger added.

I'm in the chilli/curry camp. I think it is a good idea to sweat it out, but not by bumfling yourself up in layers of clothes. add hot toddies to the mix and it's guaranteed to perk you up a little

I take a couple of Flu Capsules as soon as I know it's starting (tickle in the nose/throat area) then carry on as normal. Normal for me is OUTSIDE, if you work in an office, or other indoor environment, it won't work. Put yer coat and boots on and go for a walk. Get some fresh air in yer lungs and that should sort it.

Olbas oil on yer Pillow, will relieve the sniffles, and sleep propped up, so the gunge doesn't accumulate on yer chest.

Hot toddies are great too - even if it's just to help you sleep. A little of what you fancy does ya good!

Brilliant, thanks for your advice. Have just spent 3 hours in bed & feel a little better. Mrs BM has just bought Jamie Olivers' new book & as we have loads of veggies to use up, I can see some curries coming along. I'll try & keep my distance, don't want any of you lovely grapes coming down with it.

Sounds good! If you want to rest, rest. If you want to sleep, sleep; that's when your body mends. I have no patience with folk that just sit around and moan about having a cold, but you sound like you're being positive, which, as far as I'm concerned, is the best way to fight it! Hope you feel better soon mate! A drop of my Sloe Gin'll warm you up!
