  • How can I get rid of a dead animal smell

For years we have had rats and tried eveything to get rid, most have took the quickest route and went for the trap but one seems to have took the posion and I think its paying me back by dying under my floorboards in my living room.
It is stinking my room out I cant reach it, cant lift the floor or anything any ideas on what I can do??

It takes a few weeks...and maybe a load of bluebottles...but the smell does go.

We had one in our wall cavity a while back .
Windows open as much as you can
Do you have a dining room you can move into for a short while or is it one big room?

Forgot to add....try burning incense and making batches of chutney ...the vinegar will help mask the smell.

I5s all one big room, the smell is in the door way between my dining room and kitchen and this leads on to my living room, all 3 rooms are all connected by only 1 door. The smell is awful, stomach turning infact. Im getting some oils today to burn but its irritating me as the smell seems to hang at mid air. Think Im just going to stick to the rat trap after this.

Yup- agreed. Poisons really aren't the way to go unless you are utterly desperate.
Remember to check the traps every day too cos they too can smell if you forget about them.

Good job it's 'summer' and you can leave your windows open eh?

Pots of bicarb of soda aswell, or put some in the foot of tights and hang up hidden away.

We've had the same experience and it's awful. We survived it by burning incense candles and whacking the flies with fly swats. Poison is a nightmare, we aren't going down that road again.

There is always 'The Big Cheese', a sonic mouse and rat repeller. It doesn't kill them, but the high pitched sound (undetectable to humans) drives them away.

You can also get protective covers for drains and gutter pipes (i.e. to stop them going up there) and any DIY/hardware store will stock ready mix cement (2 kg bags for small jobs). Just add water to the mix as directed, to fill in any cracks or holes where they might be getting in.

And be careful with food waste of course. That's the number one reason for attracting rats.

^^^^ We use the 'Big Cheese' to cure our mouse problem and it seems to be quite successful so far (although I always think they are partying away whilst I sleep).

                      Does it work for rats?

Don't think so Kevin...we had a rat in our cellar and have an ultrasound blip per thingy going in there all the time.
It was after the peanuts for the birds- ate a hole through the plastic container!

It is supposed to deter rats as well ...

So here is the sting in the tail, we havehad 3 baby rats stumbling around the kitchen tonight. One has been killed already with the trap. They are not scared and have been out scrambling around while we have been in the same room, Im thinking they must not of been fed in a while seen as their mam is dead (well im assuming) my head is done in with the little g!ts
