    House or Land?

    OK peeps - not that I'm in this position, or close (yet), but I live in hope! If you had the option, would you choose to play safe and buy a house, or follow your dream and buy some land.

    Option A - House. This would mean a small manageable mortgage and security, but also a small garden, so probably little or no room for veg and chickens, or storage of trailer/caravan/Husband's project vehicle, bla bla bla.

    Option B - Land. This would entail living in a Caravan/Mobile home, probably no mortgage, but loads of upkeep expenses like barns/stables/gates & fencing etc. and having to put up with taking in liveries to bring in some money.

    You lot are so good at giving a diverse range of viewpoints, that other people have asked similar questions, so I thought I would. Just in case my number ever comes up! Thanking you in advance you lovely peeps!

      But would said land have planning for a mobile home?

      House is more secure for the moment, property market will be going back up from next year so anything you buy will increase in value and maybe up grade later, land and mobile home really will not appreciate in value.

      Or you could move to the fens?????

        I've gone for Land.
        Not a chance in hell in the UK, but it's my dream to move back to the family seat (sounds a lot posher than it should) in Ireland - and out there a couple of acres and a quick bit of planning permission to build a house on it is all I'd need.

        But since we're dreaming - let's make it about 5 acres and call it good.

            Not worrying about permission at the mo - there's ways and means (but I didn't say that!)

                I want some security, and would rather have a roof over my head and never enjoyed camping or mobile homes when I was younger. I would rather sit on the allotment waiting list than not have a house. :0)

                    Jolly well hope not. House prices are still too ludicrously high. Any current inflation is due to the government's propensity to put sticking plasters all over the economy in the hopes that they'll win the next election. Besides, in what other area of life are people so keen to get less for more?

                    But politics aside, I have considered a houseboat though I would have to get an allotment. And that's the thing, house or land. I vote house, not for the investment but because I would want a home and that the key word here- home.

                      I'm too old to be messing about in caravans! I've got my ideal house with a long garden (with veg and chickens in it) AND a small allotment plot. I wouldn't call the king me uncle!

                        Having lived very happily in a static caravan, I say go for the land. The caravan had a woodburner fitted so was snuggly and cosy. There's no way I'd attempt it with 3 kids, but when it was just the 2 of us we were more than happy. Oh and 2 cats & 5 kittens in there too for a while!
                        On the other hand, land is difficult to come by unless you own it yourself - look at allotment waiting lists Buying the house WITH the land is pie in the sky for most people, and finding a friendly farmer to rent you an acre or so isn't as easy as it sounds either - they never want to rent out the bits with road access, just the waterlogged or otherwise useless bits

                        Once you own it, you may later be able to wangle some planning permission, somehow...

                            How about a bit of woodland and a yurt? Then you've got all the fuel you need for your woodburner and could clear some of the wood i.e. coppicing to grow your own. If you're lucky to have a stream even better.

                            Get smaller house/ground floor flat with garden and have this as your playground. Also sell the wood to get a bit of pocket money.

                              i've voted land. i'd rather have the land and figure out the logistics later, than have a house with a postage stamp back garden.
                              have to say, i like Nicos idea of moving france!!.....shame i dont speak the language!
