  • Hot Beds?

Couldn't decide what category this came under under cover or where to be honest?

Has anyone made one of these before, I've got access to as much horse muck as I need and thought I'd have a go at building a 6ft square hot bed this year for my salads, and to start off some other crops.

I was going to build it with surplus concrete blocks as it will be easier to remove one end later on, and the concrete should store some of the heat generated, enough for me to rest my cold frame next to it at least.

I used one for squash and courgettes last year. Left the courgettes to grow on in it. It works brilliantly. Will be repeating the exercise this year.

Sounds like a brilliant idea. Never tried one myself thought they were usually used for pineapple, melon etc???

I grew melon last year and put bricks and water bottles around them. These warmed up in the sun during the day and provided extra heat late into the evening. Fruit was yummmmmmm

Kennixton is one of the reconstructed houses at the National History Museum, formerly called the Museum of Welsh Life, formerly called the Welsh Folk Museum or, as we know it, St Fagans on the outskirts of Cardiff. There's a wide range of traditional and historic gardens there as well as farm animals. Great day out and its Free!

They've been doing a lot of construction work around Kennixton - rebuilding the outbuildings that would have been part of an old Gower farmhouse. Look out for the bee boles in the garden too.
