  • Holidays and the garden

Can anybody tell me when is the best time for gardeners to go on holiday. We went away for a week in early July and the brocolli was all gone to seed when we came back. We went away in August and everything was overgrown or half dead when we returned. Please don't say that gardeners should never go on holiday as I like to get away and it's the only time my hands look clean and my nails grow!! Also here in Ireland the schools close for 12 weeks so it's a long summer especially with no sun!!

I went to Barcelona one late Feb, and it was like our May weather, lovely.

Barcelona in February sounds lovely but I have to bring the kids so I have to take my break during the school holidays.

If you've got the kids, it ain't really a holiday is it?

I personally would say end of September/very beginning of October. The hot spells should be over and it'll rain, so no water worries. The pests will be starting to die off, and the schools will have gone back, so its cheaper - can you tell I don't have children?!?
