  • Help on wireless router please?

Help! When I first moved here, we had a wired PC which was subsequently joined by two laptops. Had a wireless router for said lappies, no problem. The wired in PC bit the dust a while ago but laptops continued to have 'net access via the router. However... the router died earlier today (don't know why) and what I was assured was a 'like for like' replacement insists that it needs to be connected to a wired PC and won't even find a wireless connection if I manually plug in the other laptop.

I suspect I may be the weak link in the chain but I really did follow the instructions and tried all the offered solutions. Can anyone offer advice?

Posting this from my phone... hope it works!

Did you try setting up the router to your pc via a wired connection? Often won't pick up wifi first. If the router is from your ISP I suggest you phone then and get them to talk you throw connecting.

Plug one of the lappies into the router to set it up,once set up you can unplug and use as a wireless

Whats the make and model number of the router, typically you need to connect either the ethernet or usb cable to the router for setup, unless its a pre configured router. Once setup is complete you can then have wireless or the ability to configure it.

Oooh, oooh, I should have said... imagine I'm in a nursing home and hard of hearing!

I probably didn't explain clearly but I did already plug in both laptops (in turn) as if they were a 'normal' wired one. Worked fine for the lappie that was wired but no dice for the one that wasn't.

          TEB - it's a Belkin N Wireless Router.

How did you setp the router because according to the dcumentation the router setup starts automaticaly or you type router setup in a browser.

So if you scan for wireless networks does anything show up, if not it maybe that wireless hasn't been setup/configured on the router. With the documentation it should say how to access the router along with the username and password, with that Belkin router you usually need to type this in the address field of your browser http://192.168.2.1 > press Enter, you are then presented with a password field, leave the password field blank and press submit. However, maybe your ISP has configured these settings differently. If this was by phone we could have you up and running in minutes.

              Thanks folks

I gave in and called Belkin support, where a nice man chanted some strange incantations and magically made it all work

Sorry to hijack, but we're having a similar ish problem with OH's laptop.

It says he has a connection (wireless) but it won't open any Net pages. We've tried allsorts, and I've spent a week Googling for help without luck (I don't understand computer-speak).

My laptop is fine, and so is Little One's. They both connect wirelessly, no probs. OH's used to, but when he took it to work to use, it suddenly didn't connect to the home hub any more. It shows a strong signal, and even says 'connected', but it ain't.

Any ideas? Is it a firewall issue (I turned that off but it made no difference) or a WeP/WaP issue?

When he took it to work did he connect to a network there, be it wired or wireless? Did he let any techies touch his machine?

Work may use a proxy server, also can he ping a web site, I would start by powering down the router for 5 minutes (even though other computers can access a web page)

He can use it at work wireless or wired, and nobody else has used it

No, see you've lost me there. I have no idea what any of that means

Click on Start, Run and type in "cmd" then click ok. A small black window should appear.

type in "ping www.google.com" and press return

If you get a reply like ... "Reply from 66.102.9.104..........." then you have a connection to the outside world. If you do it is probably a setting in your browser

For all of the above do not type in the " "
