  • Help required please ... Xmas boxes for Soldiers

... and I would think other military personnel too.

My kids this year have decided that instead of doing the usual shoe box for kiddies thing, they will do one for our armed forces.
Very good, worthy cause, I am behind it all the way.
Trouble is... I have been a single woman for more years than I care to think about.
I have daughters and sisters, I am out of touch with what sort of stuff blokes like to get for Christmas and for prezzies generally.
I would think they may like some other things not generally regarded as gifts too, (foody type stuff, etc).
I know some of you have chaps serving. Would you let me know what sort of items to put in the box please?

What a great idea - how do you go about this?

I remember 'boxes for the forces' being mentioned before when SD was in Forn Parts - but can't remember the details - is it through British Forces Overseas, or a charity?

They go to air cadets, and got them through that.
All the admin is taken care of through the staff there, sorry, not much help to you there am I.
I will ask the staff, when I next drop them off if they can give me some contact details for 'regular folk' to take part.

Piskieinboots will tell you about that one - apparently her OH, Snowdrop, was craving them in Afghanistan and grapes were able to get hold of them! TBH I have never found them but they will be straight into my trolley if I do!

There was an article in the paper a few days ago about the well meaning mistakes some people were making in what they sent; chocolate that melted, microwavable meals for guys cooking on camp fires and so on, so it's worth checking against the official list on the website.
              Today's mistake is tomorrow's compost...

Try www.supportoursoliders.org.uk (could be .co.uk) they have excellent lists of what you can and can't include. They have local representatives throughout the country.

When in Iraq, my Oh always craved for decent coffee, foody things- biscuits, mince pies, sweets, pringles and stuff to read. Toiletry items would be good too.
Well done you for helping our lads!

PS When my SIL served in Bos, her mum used to empty out shampoo bottles and fill them with Vodka! Whoops!

I know you are joking, but all parcels are checked before being handed out. Nice idea, but it would probably be confiscated before hand.

Hmm, do you think they would notice if it was injected inside oranges?

Hope your boxes go well chuck. I did 20 earlier in the year and sent them to the troops via Snowdrop. Now he's back safe and sound I'd use the supportoursoldiers website. I received some wonderful letters of thanks from the guys. I think its a lovely way to support our troops even though we are so far away (and I don't know anyone out there). So I'm going to do another few for Christmas.
If you have any tips let me know.
                          Best wishes

was chatting with a friend about these boxes and my 'male gifts' problem and they said something so blindingly obvious which I hadn't even thought about - there are women out there serving too. make a ladies box. i think i will be doing one of each now as i got lots of ideas for the guys stuff

Do you send the shoebox to a co-ordinator (there don't appear to be any Scottish contacts on the shoebox website) or do you send them directly out to the servicemen/women?
