  • Help needed in Leeds!

    Hello everyone!

Im popping on to see if anyone can help our community group? I am parent chair of a community group called NEW SHOOTS (sound familiar!!) based at Bracken Edge Primary school in Leeds 7.We are a parent led group set up to provided opportunities to grow fruit, grain, veg and flowers for children at the school and adults.

CLEARANCE DAYS AT BRACKEN EDGE PRIMARY SCHOOL
Newton Garth, Newton Road, Leeds LS7 4HE
    SATURDAY 22nd September - SUNDAY 23rd September
    10.30 - 3.00pm

We have been running for 2 years now and have just been given a patch of land, probably about the size of a full allotment plot!! Its within the school grounds and very very overgrown, saplings, pampas grass......We are hoping to be able to use the area with the children in the Spring.

We have arranged with the school to have 2 clearance days where the school gates are thrown open for anyone who would like to help. We need to people to bring tools..we only have small childrens tools and a couple of garden forks! A packed lunch, and something to share with others if you want to. We will provided refreshements and some goodies. Children are very welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.

You don't have to come for the whole session,or both days, every half hour will count!

I hope some of you can come and help us! Feel free to message me for more info if you want to. Thankyou!

Hope you get lots of volunteers and good weather. Well done for being the first BM. I'm not in a position to help, but I'll keep my fingers crossed for you Donna.

Oooh thankyou so much BM!! Any time you can offer will be great. Im posting everywhere I can think of! Not many offers so far, even within our group! Hopefully there will be a few New shoots members, maybe a few staff. Ive also posted on FB on various pages....its hard to jygde refreshments when you dont know how many are coming...

I'm assuming you have put posters up or will do nearer the time. Maybe an advert in the local post office.

One way to juggle the refreshments is to have someone who may not be able to help with the digging, weeding, strimming etc, but would be happy to organise the resfreshments when you see how many you have helping. We do that at pony club.

I have posters and flyers. We have some community notice boards near by so some will go in there, one in supermarket, library, poast office, plus we have the Feed Leeds event on Thursday at shine so will hand out flyers there too.

We will all do baking etc, and will have tea and coffee and soft drinks, hopeully we may have someone who wants to do stuff with the kids when they get bored!!

Think weather will be the main issue!

Donna I'll pop in for a couple of hours, on one of the days.

Have you contacted local allotments??? Folks on those might give an hour or two. If you want the contact details PM me.

I'll forward to our allotments holders.

It's a difficult one when these things encroach on parents weekends espescially if they are working through the week, have no interest in gardening or believe that the school should provide these activities. Having said that, the group that did turn out got loads done & hopefully the weather will bless us again tomorrow& we can bottom the area. If HM reads this................Rally the troups!

I have tried, but think part of the problem is lack of notice......LCC Allotments Office only sent an email out on Tuesday so people have not had much time to sort themselves out. Maybe you need to organise a 2nd session Donna with more notice???

Am still intending to get down tomorrow for an hour....
