  • Have your eating habits changed?

    Since you have been growing?

We have a very 'normal consumer' consumption I suspect, and so we wonder how we will accomodate suddenly having to eat what we produce (assuming that anything grows...) - but we have found after four weeks or so of chickens producing 5 eggs a day (now six) that we have changed our habits to eat what is produced.

Initially we didn't, and we had eggs coming out of our ears - but now suddenly we use what is there.

So I wondered if we'd do the same on the plot? Once we start a steady flow of home grown (oh yes!) will it change our eating?

well if you've only ever eaten whats in season then not really but if you buy strawbs, beans etc out of season and now you stick to home produced then yes it will ......

Since we've been growing our own I think we're eating better and more varieties of veg . It's fresher and I know where and how it's been grown with no chemicals used.

I've been cooking from scratch a lot more and trying out recipes I find on here and elsewhere to use up my produce. Some of my friends are really chuffed about that as I always make too much for one

And who would have thought courgette cake and pumpkin cake tasted so good - or courgette soup would be so lovely

I think it makes you more adventurous with what you have. Instead of plain boiled or steamed veg, I tend to search for more things to do with them. Google is a wonderful tool, and so is the season to taste section on the Vine.

I've found that we've cut down on the amount of meat we used to eat because there's so many tasty that don't need it.

Now we eat more ploughmans style lunches of salads, chutneys, eggs etc and lots of homemade soups and i know its strange but today i have been planning where to fit more cucumbers because I really fancy a massive plate of cucumber with balsamic vinegar drool.....

We quite often miss out the carbs (eg potatoes) in a meal and just have a big pile of veg. And cooked lettuce with peas is amazing! You do find youself eating weird but great combinations just so you can eat meals entirely grown by yourself

We eat more seasonally now, even if we haven't grown it ourselves. Unfortunately, I decided to cut out the carbs again, to lose weight, then harvested the best tasting spuds I'd ever eaten. We actually have people queueing up to buy my spuds!

Having your own eggs ensures a couple of cheap meals a week using just leftovers, as Ommelettes and Frittatas are quick, easy and delicious.

The one thing I find really annoying, is that shop-bought Veg may look delicious, but the taste almost never compares with home-grown. Therefore, I often find I travel further to buy from Farm Shops, which are usually more expensive.

I think a quote from one of Bob Flowerdew's books that I have as part of my signature sums it up nicely!
Alas, this year has been a poor year for me at the allotment so i have faltered!

I do get a regular supply of eggs from the chooks tho and as my Mam used to say "If you've got an egg in the house, you've got a meal"

Once you change your mindset from eating "what you fancy" to "what you have available", your diet will become more varied, more interesting, cheaper and better for the planet (fewer air miles, fewer chemicals*, etc)

                      * bagged lettuce apparently is sprayed about 26 times whilst growing, and then washed in bleach

I am no where near self sufficient, just a veg patch in the garden. Our eating and cooking habits have changed so much though. I cook much more from scratch, never buy processed meals, rarely buy jars of sauces. I even make pastry which I honestly thought was an arcane art before I found the Vine

Absolutely- having a veg plot, chickens for meat and eggs, everything gets used and inventively- I would say my cooking skills have developed and we certainly eat less meat now that we understand the reality of how its life ought to be- i am deeply suspicious of the supermarket now!

I always have a wonder around the garden to see whats ready before deciding whats for tea, today there's a fair bit of chard so it will be a gratin.

it changed my shopping, used to go once a week and by the same selection, then choose from the fridge,NOW we eat what we got 99% of the time, even mrLD tasts buds have changed, when you cook a standard dinner of pre-lottie,you find it very boaring,i love it,you choose from your own suppermarket,be it freezer, dried, sacked or stored squash, not only the taste, and pride of growing it,you know where it's come from, warts and all,
On looking back at general shopping, and the cost of todays bills,if i not grow,we deffinatly not be able to afford the vegg we consume now,or more intersting dishes to over exite the pallet,
