  • Hampton Court Competition

I'm guessing not many of you saw the One Show yesterday evening. It had a competition to design a 8 x 8 metre garden for Hampton Court show in July.

Its for keen amateurs, so no one with a horticultural qualification can enter, I've added a link to the criteria if anyone else fancies having a go.

I thought perhaps we can have our own mini competition, so after the cutoff date we could upload our own designs and vote for best design.

Anyone else up for a flight of fantasy.

There are too many No-Nos for me to enter Mikey. Just look at the list -its everything I'd want in a garden :-

    The design should not include:
    Artificial plants.
    Structures over 2m in height.
    Music/sound effects.
    Mirrors.
Glass chippings, crushed CDs, etc and selected waste materials.
    Commercial references (signs, logos etc.)
    Balloons, flags, gnomes, bunting, banners.
Offensive statuary, graphics or other artworks.
    Hazardous items.
Anything likely to cause annoyance to adjacent gardens.

They could have said "just plants"

Yes saw that and to be honest it made me a bit sad. Why does everything have to be a competition? I find it quite off putting and would find it better if they just promoted doing things for the sheer joy of it.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Not sure I understand Alison, what you win is a chance of building your design in hampton court show, there's no financial reward to winning. To me that would be classed as doing it for the sheer joy of it?

I'm probably not explaining myself very well but it disappoints me that so much emphasis is put on competition these days. Things like gardening are great or their own sake, you don't have to be the best to enjoy things but you'd never realise that from everything you see in the media .

Yes, I am VC. I have already done my first draft.

I would have to disagree with you though Alison, as a purely amateur gardener where and how could I possibly build a garden with all the ideas I have wandering around in my head without having to pay for it myself. I've no desire to turn this into a business, I just want to create something beyond my budget parameters. You might not like the concept of a competition, but just about everything we do in life involves some form of competition, even if it is just with mother nature.
