Default Had a bit of a scare at the weekend

Received a call from my Mum on Saturday night that my Dad was being taken to hospital as they thought he'd had a heart attack - now my dad's not the fittest pesron in the world, and has smoked for the last 40 years, but you still don't expect it when it happens.

Anyway, I drove straight to the hospital and into the emergency room where dad was propped up on a trolley with tubes, sensors and alike all over the place - he looked pretty bad. After we'd been stood there for about a minute the machines started beeping away the nurse started calling for help and they laid the trolley flat as we were ushered out. The next 45 minutes were the longest in my life!

We went back in and he looked a lot better - and we eventually got him up to the CCU (Coronary Care Unit) at about midnight that evening. Preliminary tests suggest that its some form of angina, but he's in all week for tests and such.

Makes you realise how quickly things can change.

Went to see him again yesterday and he's a look more perky, will go again tonight to see how he doing.

He thought he'd be going home the following day silly bugger. I think he's getting used to the idea - the food's good, and the nurses are fantastic. He's getting better food and treatment there than he does at home I think, so he's happy for now!

I congratulated him last night on being an ex-smoker for the past 24 hours, let's hope he keeps it up, I want him to see his grand children when we eventually have them. He's only 57! Also said that if he didn't fancy helping me on the allotment over winter he just had to say, no need to go and do anything as drastic as this to get out of it!

Look after yourselves.

Someone mention my name

Seriously though Hey Wayne, I hope your Dad is well on the road to recovery by now.

These things bring you up short and, as you said, you never expect it.

Similar thing happened with my Mum about 6 months ago. She wasn't breathing properly and after much argument my Sister FINALLY got her into hospital. Not quite sure what it was but she wasn't getting enough oxygen into her lungs, something to do with her heart.
Anyway, long story short she is on the mend now and, to quote my brother "running around like a teenager" She's 74 now and stopped smoking when she got into hospital and hasn't started again yet so, perhaps there is hope for your Dad.

I really wish you and your family well and let's hope your Dad stays off the "weed"

Sorry to hear about your Dad HW, he's in the right place thou, at least he'll be sorted with the right medication and treatment he needs.
My Grandad had an MI in his 50's which prompted him to give up smoking. he's now in his 80's and pretty fit and active, he gave up his lottie 3 years ago but still grows his own in the garden, and is always on the go!
Hope your Dads feels better soon x

Tis a good time to tell him you love him.
Guys don't tell their mums and dads often enough!

The scare will hopefully help him stop smoking??

Hey Wayne, so sorry about your dad, and glad he's on the mend.

If only he'd quit smoking before his health got this bad ... I hope he can now recover fully and be around for a while longer.

Sorry about your Dad HeyWayne, glad to hear he's perked up a bit. Mine is just out of ICU (but still connected to allsorts of machinery). You kind of expect your Dad to be invincible as you're growing up, can be a bit earth-shaking when you realise they're mortal like everyone else! Although my Dad doesn't smoke, he is still going to have to make some major life-style changes when he gets home, so we're all talking about how/what/when/why, and what we can do to help.
Good luck to you all, hope he carries on improving

Sorry to hear your Dad's new HeyWayne, but this is his chance to 'do better' - sadly some people don't get another chance. Hope you keep him weed free and I'm sure the follow-up he gets will include regular exercise. T'ai Chi's brilliant. Just got home from my weekly class.

If its Angina it not too bad, it could have been worse. But it is still very serious.

Keep on the good side of the nurses, (cakes, bics, chocs), so he will be in there a while.

Best Wishes

We've been told we can't be seen by the public eating chocolates etc.... sends out the wrong image apparently! Bloody cheek! Sometimes were so busy we don't even take a break for a drink!!
Anyway, sorry HW off thread, but a "thank you" to the nurses always goes a long way.

What they are trying to stop is when you are in nights going round and drinking all the Lukasade and eating all the grapes when the paitents are asleep.

Been in that position when my mum had a couple of heart attacks a few years ago (suspected angina was confirmed on that day, but a rogue blood clot caused the HA's). Never been so scared or felt so helpless in my life. (I'm sure it what prompted me to become a nursing asst with a view to training up in a year or two)

Best wishes to you all, and hope your dad is well on the way to recovery now.
