  • Got me thinking back........

On the post about garlic, it got me thinking back to when I was a kid.

I was born and raised in what is now known as Docklands in East London.

There was an area of wasteland we knew as the Vernons where garlic grew wild.

Now my Dad was well known for making his own herbal remedies and used to send us kids out armed with bags (size dependant upon the item required) to harvest various things he needed.

Many a time I've been sent to the Vernons to collect garlic for him, although I can't remember what he used this for.

There was one area in our local park where provided the park keeper hadn't mowed it in time, Dad used to send us with the brown paper bags you get from the greengrocers and pairs of sissors to collect a particular type of grass but it had to have the seed heads as well or he wouldn't pay us. This he made up into his version of Optrex.

When I grew up (OH would say I have never really grown up), my first wife was suffering from achy shoulders, so Dad prescribed a bottle of his mixed fruit remedy for her. About a week later he asked her how she was and did the remedy work for her. "Oh yes she told him, the pain has gone away but it did taste a bit iffy". "Dozy cow" he said "You were supposed to rub it in"
I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.
