  • Good year to be a newbie!

Im thinking I picked the best year possible to start growing my own!
I have no clue what Im doing and so if even one thing comes up and produces something edible I am dancing round the garden and leaping for joy!!
At the beginning of the year my garden was an empty patio and a bit of weedproof fabric......now its a virtual jungle out there!! Its cold, its wet and apparently a terrible year for growing anything...........

    ........but it is growing!!

I'm a newbie every year and am pathetically grateful for anything that I can grow and eat. Since my expectations are low, I'm never disappointed

Equal playing field this year - O our site the newbies and the oldies plots are all about equal.......weeds and slugs seem to rule!
Good luck to all - and newbies of this year, well if you can grow veg or plants this year then the rest will be a doddle

I'm almost ready to put the cover over my plot and give it up until autumn.

I've lost most of my strawberries, all of my courgettes, my pumpkins, my runners, carrots, beetroot, potatoes, brocolli, kale. I'm thinking of planting some more peas this weekend as the forecast looks good. I wonder how long it will be before the slugs have those too.

I'm thinking maybe this is a good year for beginners, even if it's a bad year for the experienced growers, I don't know why, but the one thing I do know for certain is that where I used to have a bit of a lawn and a smaller bit of paved area, I now have so much life that there's barely room to move. It's a good thing that I didn't get 100% germination! Next year I'll be sowing less.
Tried and Tested...but the results are inconclusive

The first thing I did on our new allotment 3 months ago was to get two huge builders dumpy thingies. One if now full of carrots and I have been harvesting them the last couple of weeks. They are mini fingers variety but seem to be growing very well. Disappointing that the second one has only a few parsnips that have germinated but worth a try. Lost my sweetcorn due to poor weather and mice ate my peas but I have mange tout growing nicely. It's good to hear you are having some success. I don't think I'll ever lose the enthusiasm for growing my own veg and next year can only be better, surely?

That's just the way I feel Mikey. I'm sick of feeding the snugs. So glad to hear you others are enjoying it and having some success. I have some gherkins in tubs that are greased up to prevent snug attack and I watched a small snail this evening scale the leek plants in modules next to the tubs. As the leek bent over, the snail dropped into the tub of gherkin plants. Unbelievable, they'll be waging war on us next.

I'm blaming every failure on the weather (and the slugs). Tomato plants are trying their hardest but they are fighting a losing battle unless the weather improves. My 2nd sowing of baby carrots have bitten the dust and I can't even grow salad leaves on the window sill. Any successes get me all excited. Let's face it - if I can grow anything at all this year I'll be laughing in a good year!

It's my 5th try at salad and I kid you not. This time they're inside on the windowsill and I've put this sign on the window:

I under planted all my tomatoes with my salad leaves. The only way I'm getting to keep my salads this year is if I keep them in the warmth of the greenhouse and away from the slugs.

The only problem is I have a tomato which is getting wrinkly cos its taken 10 weeks to go from orange to red. Where is all the sunshine!!!
