  • Gobsmacked.

Yes I know that hard to believe but it is true, let me explain.

Today I have been back to college training to sit some new gas assessments, there I met Sam, who was also there for training. A very personable & intelligent 24/25 year old, a refreshing change for a grumpy old bugger like me.

Why was I gobsmacked well Sam stood about 5`4" to 5`5" in HER boots. Was a perfect size ten, had beautiful blonde hair and was exceptionally pretty.

She was very good at what she did and up for a laugh. Reply to a trainer when she was corrected about something was to point to her hair and just say "Blonde."

I just couldn't get my head around the fact such a pretty, and intelligent lady would want to be a plumber and what's worse she couldn't tell me.

Sam was well worth drooling over. However she has worked on building sites since she left school and I am sure you would come unstuck if you made that mistake.

She is very much her own person, very good at what she does and therefore has earned the repect of her peers.

It was just that she wanted to be a plumber of all things.

And yes we both passed glad to say.

You mean like most other women then.

I'm sure there's loads of women who want to become something - if it weren't for the ****** attitudes that they have to put up with - like blokes being gobsmacked that they could possibly want to do something practical.

I'd better go before I say something I don't regret.

              * I wish blokes would get over themselves already - you don't need testicles to use a drill. Honest. It's electricity that makes it work, not testosterone.

Colin, I do understand what you mean.

However, one day, hopefully in the not too distant future, it won't cross anyone's mind to think about gender, etc . Just someone's competence.

Let's get a few more women running banks and a few more men teaching in primary schools
Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.

No you jumping to conclusions, maybe I haven't explained it that well. It not that she wanted to do something practical its just she was so intelligent I am sure she could have done so much more. I know several ladies in the plumbing game so its not just because she was female. It was the kind of person she was and all she had ever wanted to do was be a plumber, when there is so much else out there.

And I must admit whether the ladies here like it or not that a ladies looks still do to a large part open many doors to opportunities. Rightly or Wrongly it is true.

Like DH, who is usually the only bloke on staff except for the head and the caretaker

                      Now to consider male midwives...

Pots, I thought you were liberated, free from all this stereotypecasting. Why do I feel so disappointed?
My brother is a plumber and I know that when he did his apprenticeship he would not have expected to work alongside a female plumber. But 40 or so years on, thankfully the barriers have been lifted - its a bit like male midwives!
Frankly, as long as the plumber turns up on time and does the job efficiently I don't give a monkey wrench what sex they are.
Having read your post you seem to be saying that she was too intelligent to be a plumber!!

Well, when you get men who only think 'Was a perfect size ten, had beautiful blonde hair and was exceptionally pretty' when they really meant 'intelligent' - what do you expect?
