don't see why not, its got poo and wee in it, which is supposed to be good for compost.... but you may get any seeds mixed up in it growing ........ if you get enough wheat you could make your own flour

*wonders how long it will be before you feed the gerbils to the cats

Bedding from vegetarian pets/animals is really good for the compost - loads of nutrients apparently!

they love toilet roll tubes, kitchen roll tubes, small cardboard boxes, and bits of tree (make sure the tree isn't poisinous (hawthorn, fruit or nut trees are good, but theres loads of others)

hanging things, ladders, they like wheels too, but make sure you get an enclosed one, or they can trap their tails.

if you have them in a tank, they will love digging in sand, if they are in a cage, it will get everywhere. also make assault courses out of branches, and have loads of things for them to run around and play on .... the bigger the cage the better, they are very active

if you do want to use sand, put a container (fruit tray or similar) in the corner of the tank, so it's not proud of the surface, and they should eventually use that corner as a loo, when they have the idea, replace the shavings bit by bit, with sand, then you can just remove the tray, instead of having to clean the whole cage out(works with most rodents, they like to use the same place) also tubes under sand are best mad of plastic or metal, so they don't chew it, and you can have them all leading to a little box, that they can use as a sleeping area. ...... with a big enough space gerbils are incredibly entertaining. (obviously adapt thest to the size of their living space, and ease of escape
oh yeah, make sure they have some soft bedding too, so they can get snuggly.
