So proud of our elder son - his GCSE results were great!

Maths and Science double award - A; Business Studies - B; History, English, Religious Studies, Geography - C; Welsh, Systems and Control - D

In all, 3 x A; 1 x B; 4 x C and 2 x D

Very pleased with those, he is now going back to do A Level Maths, Physics and I.T. Well done son!

I don't know how they do so many these days - we did (I think) 8 O levels in my day - and the one GCSE that I've taken this year (ok, so just in one year and not two) has taken up loads of time (or should have! )

Pleased with mine (got and A!) - but am very much aware when picking my results up yesterday that it's not a 'big deal' at my age when you're studying for fun, but it does affect what your next step of life will be when you are 16!

Don't envy him A level maths, tho'....

I remember one lad in my year doing 10 O levels and getting straight A's - never did see his A level results though so I guess he burned out!

Son is actually looking forward to A level Maths and Physics - he wants to be a pooter geek at the moment but his choices leave him with a wide range of career options should that change.

Younger son just about to start secondary school and Madmax and I looked at each other this morning and said 'where have the years gone?' - we celebrated our 17th wedding anniversary a week ago so we must be getting old!

My niece picked hers up yesterday, 1 A (in PE of all things, although she assures me it's real subject not just running about like when I was at school!), 3 Bs and 5 Cs. She's pleased and it means she can go on to 6th form college to do Law, IT, Business Studies and psychology. No idea what she wants to do with it, I was more like Shirl's lad in that I was good at maths and stuff like that but that all seems a long time ago now. Can't believe how much pressure there is on them now, doesn't help that all the papers keep saying they're getting easier as it just means however well they do somebody always says that it was easier in their day!!!!

Well done!!! I have to say I dont know how anyone could cope with A level Math - I was (still am) more of an English and wordy girl rather than sums and numbers! Congrats to all those who achieved good results and good luck for the next step, whatever they might chose that to be.

Well done all of them!!Taking the dogs up to our field yesterday,I had to pass two Senior schools and loved to see the throngs of youngsters either in raptures of delight or in serious conversation on their mobile 'phones.
I hated school!!Every minute of every day that I was there was a torture!Therefore I took 'nor passed any exam.Do I regret it? No. I know now that schools are (or should be)a better place than they were,which is probably the reason for higher pass rates,not easier exams.Children,especially,the more timid ones are given encouragement and all are given support.
Children in general are more confident these days and aware of their capabilities and good luck to them.
Also,young people today are encouraged in their ambitions.They know they can go to where they want to go.Too many of my generation were thwarted through lack of funds,lack of parental foresight and lack of oppurtunity.
Any one these days can do anything---go out and do it!!
Who knows,I may have been a ballerina if my ma hadn't said "sixpence for a ballet lesson-what nonsense!!"

I agree with Polly school was torture...I went back to my old school the other day to see if it still had Arbeit macht frei over the gates.

The problem with more people going to universitey and having loads of A and A* results (whats and A*) is that it devalues the exam.

When I was looking for a jobafter i left school in the late 70s every job had the no fo o levels required.

Now we don't bother with them or degrees. I go more for the poeple who have done a Saturay job since they were 14 or were in the cadets. Cos you get these poeple who went to school then university and mummy and daddy paid all the bills so they didn't need to worry about working then they get to the big wide world at 22 and its all a shock.

NOG I get your point about university but with the career the lad wants, he needs the piece of paper. However, he has a weekend job at Halfords and has to do chores at home to earn money so he should have his head screwed the right way. Madmax and I cannot afford to send him through higher education, he will have to work his way through. We hope he will get through to the other end as a well-balanced individual with a good sense of his own identity and the necessity to work for what he wants to achieve.
