  • Gasp and marvel at my ingenious kitchen cupboards!

OK, here are my amazing 1-tin-deep cupboards, built by the previous owner. I used to hate them, but now have been converted....

However, no comments on contents please!

Oooh! They're great, 'specially for packets or spices which are really wasteful of cupboard space!! I can see why you love them OWG.

What a good idea - no more out of date stuff lingering at the back where you just can't quite reach!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Mine are standard cheapo cupboards, provided by the landlord. Fitted by a man, so too high for me to reach easily. I'm always losing stuff.

Am in the process of redesigning the kitchen at the moment (hopefully getting some money through this summer which has been earmarked for the very purpose) and one of my main stipulations is that the cupboards go all the way to the ceiling as am fed up with having to clean the tops and will use the top up high shelves for things that don't get used much eg Christmas cake tins, Easter egg moulds etc. Will be keeping my huge larder cupboard though which has proper deep shelves on which I have those big plastic boxes. One contains tinned stuff, one sweet baking stuff, one savoury baking stuff etc etc. When I want something from any of them I know which one to pull out onto the worktop and then can easily see what's in there. To have that amount of contents only one deep wouldn't work in my kitchen as I like to have my store cupboard very well stocked (never know when I might want something ) and would need a kitchen bigger than my house!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I want some too...lots in the kitchen and some more in my workroom - perfect for stacks & stacks of FQs. I can see why you hated them, Shelley, and I can see why you now love them.

I'd soooo love a proper larder too...with a slate floor and a marble shelf and a mesh window.

I store a lot more than I'd use in a month but a) like to have choice and b) have a lot of things which I use occaisionally eg golden syrup, several different types of oil, likewise several types of vinegar, etc etc. I know I'm a bit of a hoarder on that front but I do use it all over time and never leave it long enough for any to go off - honest! And on a plus point, if there is ever a major event that means I can't get out, I have enough food for about a year

Think I may get the food hoarding thing from my nans although in their case they used to only stockpile tea bags and sugar or tinned fruit depending on which nan we're talking about!

Fantastic - they remind me of the old fashioned general stores (prior to supermarkets). I love 'em.

Don't understand all this talk of not being able to reach stuff though...

                        Aha!

Well, if it helps, I have another 2 of those cupboards on the other side of the doorway!!

One of them is my baking cupboard (5 kinds of flour, syrups, sugars etc) and the other is medicines etc.

Saying that, I've just done a quick count and have 3 types of vinegar and six kinds of oil

I tend to hoard stuff in the freezer actually. I've got a seperate freezer in the garage which I struggle to squish anything else in!

I think these cupboards are great. Although not as shallow, my favourite cupboards in our kitchen are the base units made from wall units which we have along one wall.
You can see exactly what's in them and everything is easy to get to. No stress trying to find stuff.
