  • A funny thing happened on way to visit new newphew - well frightening really!

I saw my nephew yesterday - had a lovely day. No tears just lots of smiles. Had quite a bit of time on my own with him whilst sis had a sleep and did get that twang in my nose you get if you are about to get upset (anyone know what I mean?) as I remembered but it was lovely and he is really cute. He looks so like an old man it made me laugh!

BUT - what a journey! It takes an hour and quarter to Enfield and I was doing so well on time. I had been on the road for about an hour, was on the A1M and had just seen the sign for the M25 so I knew it wasnt far then and I heard a bang. I just assumed I had gone over something in the road and that was that. A couple of mins later I realised the car was juddering and stupidly thought it had slipped out of gear (right blonde moment for a brunette!) so I went down to 4 - car didnt react at all so I went back into 5, glanced out of the rear mirror and saw thick black smoke coming from the rear of my car. Then and only then did I smell burning - I though Bl@@dy hell the cars on fire and pulled over pretty sharpish onto the hard shoulder just yards from the junction exit.

Daniel said "Are we here now Mummy" All I could think was - must get out before it blows up. I put hazzards on, grabbed mobile and Daniel and walked (didnt quite get into a run) away from the car. Was so glad that there was a barrier that we were behind but was so terrified that Daniel would try and run off with all the traffic wizzing past (was I really going that fast just before) I was holding his hand really tightly - just in case. I thought "what on earth do I do now"? I tried hubbie - no answer, Mum - no answer, sister - no answer so I thought s@d it and rang the police. They said to call the recovery company if I had one but it was hubbies car and all the documents were in the car - I said (getting tearful now) "I cant go back to the car as smoke is comming from it so I cant take my son and I cant leave him in case he runs into the road". I was so releived when they said they would send someone!

Hubbie then rang and said the number needed was inside the keyfob - yep you guessed it I had been holding the bl@@dy info I needed all along! He said he would ring and he arranged for the RAC to come. Didnt want to call the police back again so decided to just wait and as I was stood there I saw the front passenger tyre was flat. It then dawned on me that I had got a puncture and the smoke/burning was just comming from the tyre. I felt a right wally then didnt I but the Police were really nice - checked we were ok and had help comming and the RAC turned up about 1/2 hour later. I was back on the road within an hour of it all.

BUT it wasnt a proper spare that is kept in the boot of hubbies car and you have to keep below 50mph - have you ever gone that slow on a motorway! I must have piŁŁed off every driver on the M25 whilst I limped from J23 to J25 - I was soooooooooooo slllllllllllllllooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwww! I am never going to flash or beep my horn at a car going slow again!

Funny thing is the tyre in the same position on my car has only just been replaced so it would have been very annoying to get a puncture in that one - just lucky I wasnt driving my car! Even funnily enough the same thing happened to my car last time we replaced a tyre - I got a puncture only days later. Hubbie says we have fooled the tyre fairy this time.

Off to hang washing out - oh joys of being a sahm!

As for holding the info in your hand all the time (hehe, I'd have done the same but then I am blonde) - so what, you needed help - you did the right thing in calling the police

Glad you're both ok, front tyre blowouts can be hairy things - especially at speed.

Glad you had a good time with your nephew too.

Spacesaver tyres are a pain in the rear - no idea who thought they'd be a good idea. Mine has a full-size spare, but have been fortunate never to have had to use it.

Might be an idea to put your recovery service company's number in your mobile for future use.

Glad you are both ok I am completly dumb when it comes to cars and I have been driving for over 30 years. Have to get someone else to do everything bar put petrol in. One of my sons did do a car mechanics course but had to give up so I usually call on him if he is around.
