  • Free range chicken?

Im trying to live by a new rule " meat is a treat", im not a big red meat eater anyway but i enjoy chicken, but i want to eat organic/free range rather than the battery hens, does anyone know the best place to buy this type of chicken?

    good eve

we only eat free range/organic chicken, because there is more meat and its tastier too, as we dont really eat a lot of red meat either. I look around, had a lovely bird today from tesco and it was also corn fed, but the best tasting one i have had yet was from m&s, and it was cheaper than tesco as well.

    Hope that helps

Are there any FR chicken farmers near you? If you can buy direct then more money goes to the farmer, if you know they only grow FR birds then you know that's what you're getting.
Farmers Markets? That's where I get mine, but there is an element of doubt - they say it's FR, but how do I actually know?
I s'pose with Tescos etc you know you're getting what's on the label.
As for taste...I'd go with a corn fed bird too.

We get ours from a local butcher, and its a lot cheaper than the supermarket. Bring back the butcher, as the number one source for meat.! They are far more knowledgable than the supermarkets, and can offer some recipe ideas for some of the less used cuts.

I am trying to use our butcher more too but I find it hard as I dont actualy earn any money and the household at Sainsburys shop goes on the joint card. If I buy from the butchers its cash and then I have to get money off hubbie - have you ever tried to get blood out of a stone?!!!

Ahhh thats why he often falls asleep - fully dressed (wallet in pocket) on sofa and dont stir till time to get up again! Tee Hee

I had a mind that you would have a very clever reply! but thought it would be along the lines of...blood does come out of a stone if you hit your wrists against it hard enough - ouch - bit gruesome though eh!

Andi's bankcard belongs in my purse!!Every now & then he gets some pocket money for good behaviour! But on serious note~he never goes shopping,I sort out having food in the house etc so it makes more sense for me to have access to the money, but he knows i'm not a woman that takes pleasure in needless shopping,so i only use it for necessities.(SC?)~I'm really paranoid about my spelling on here now!!

Wouldn't live with somebody if they wanted to go for the this money is mine and not yours and you can only spend that bit regardless of the fact that it's on loo roll or whatever. It's simply a matter of trust, if you don't trust somebody with money then should you really be with them? However, that's a whole different discussion....

Back to thread - basically, don't buy from supermarket if you can help it, their meat is not of particuarly good quality, heavily packaged and has often travelled very high mileage (even if it's just round the UK). Buy from your local farm / butchers etc or if not possible then you can sometimes get some good deals on the internet and fiill the freezer.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
