    Forced Rhubarb is it worth the expense?

    As you can see I am a Yorkshire girl through and through and know that we are not known for splashing the cash....

    ON Friday I spent £3.11 (nearly killed me) on 4 sticks of forced Rhubarb Triangle Rhubarb (£4.00/kilo). I thought the only thing to do with it as it was so precious was to make a crumble, but it was so tasteless...... so disapointed

    Does anybody else like it or is it just me? My rhubarb was juvenile last year and didn't dare take too much so none in the freezer to curb craving - off to lottie to tell it to hurry up and grow

    It is worth it if you absolutely love Rhubarb and forgot to freeze some last year. Otherwise, I doubt it! But it is nice to add the equivalent in £ when you calculate the value of your homegrown crop - tops up the totals nicely!
    Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

      Wouldn't buy it at that price. I'll wait for the lottie to start producing.

        I don't like forced rhubarb myself. It's sweeter and less acidic, but to me it's the sharp flavour that defines rhubarb. I never force my own rhubarb (I persuade it, though!) and never buy it. However, obviously, some people love it or they wouldn't pay that much for it!

          The price makes me wince but as mine is at the seeding stage and it is not spring unless you have some rhubarb just have to go with it.

            I like it but not as much as the unforced kind. I think it depends what you do with it too, as it's a much more delicate flavour and easily overpowered.

            You must be nearly within the Exalted Holy Rhubarb Triangle Karen! Seems daft that you're having to pay so much when it was probably grown on your doorstep!

              There is no way bought rhubarb at -any- price can come near to the flavour of pulling, preparing, cooking and eating your own within just a few hours! I force a few sticks every year (just with an old bucket and straw) for an extra early helping.

              Many years ago we had the idea of making rhubarb wine, went to 'pick-your-own' farm, completely over-estimated the amount we picked - and ended up paying, red-faced, for about 20lbs of the stuff!!
