  • Food for Thought....

    So in my inexperienced wisdom I grew WAY too many tomato plants.
    Having no idea what to do with them all, I advertised them on a Facebook selling page at a quid each.
    They actually sold like hot cakes! All 25 extra plants went within a day!!

    This gives the entrepreneurial (read: dreamer) side of me ideas for next year....

                I have 4 local gardening groups on my lacebook page (see the intentional mistake there?) and there are several people who sell plants.

                If you are thinking about it next year I would recommend (after looking at what they sell) indoor and outdoor toms (the outdoor ones seem to go really quick as not everyone has a greenhouse), Q's, courgettes, pumpkin/squash and aubergines. Most veg can be bought from a couple of sellers including DFB's, runners and brassica's.

                There are a few sellers who also sell both annual and perenial plants which go like hot cakes.

                  I saw a yootoob vid recently of a guy extolling the virtues of doing just that. Slice a tomato and you have a dozen seeds, do that 6 times and the return on your 1 tomato could be 70+ plants. Who doesn’t have the odd tomato that’s past eating now and then? So say 10 soggy tomatoes give you 70 seeds each and provide at least 50 healthy plants each. That’s £500 at £1 a plant. Use recycled water cups from work and make your own compost and the incentive is huge.

                    I'm still new at this, you're gonna have to tell me what Q's and DFB's are?

                    I'm not as ambitious to try and make any sum of money worth boasting about, i don't have the space nor time. But if one could make something back on the cost of seed, compost, feed, etc then that would be pretty awesome.

                      Q's = cucumbers

                      DFB's = dwarf french beans.

                      Hope it helped.
