Fences

I don't see why not - as long as it is not a permanent thing, which most planters or trellises are not- because the fence will belong to your neighbour and they may decide to take it down, change it etc. They have a right to reasonable access to their fence in order to do that.

As long as you don't damage the fence, or increase the height of it, I can't see that there would be a problem. How well do you get on with the owner of the fence?

Well, technically/legally, you can't.

However, ask permission and I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem. Especially if you went round bearing gifts (broad beans, courgettes?)

what you could do is put some trellis up of your own 18in or more away,that will give an air gape as well,being better for both your plants and the nextdoor fence,
as for hanging anything on it,as in pots,personaly i would not,have done this with our own,and it was not good for the fence,and would not be amused if our neighbours did this with ours either,we have a good rapour with them as well,
you could always ask as a matter of curtasy,you never know,just be aware in case they come to you for help in any replacement fencing in the future,

I'm with TS you can't legally paint, stain, lean anything or attach something to a neighbours fence. Even if its a party fence you both have to agree before doing anything to it.

See this is actually the whole thing over the fence, it's been an issue now for the last couple of years, we was always under the impression that the fence to the right of our property was our fence. However our neighbours on the left claim that our fence is the one on the left, no one seems to actually know who's fence is who's.

There is an old boundary marking fence which runs up the middle and looks unsightly, when we got the chickens we decided to replace the top half of the garden fence (one of the left) with a 6foot fence which was on our side of the boundary.

Our neighbours have now decided to replace the bottom half of the fence (on their right, our left) however the boundary fence is still left standing and they have put the fence on their side of the garden so it does a kind of zig zag down the garden.

So we both kind of own half each of the fence, we do not talk to them anymore as I caught the bloke throwing dogs muck in my garden, we do not have a dog they do, so I confronted him about it, he slipped over and banged his head...... long story but they tried to say I punched him blah blah the only thing I did was give him back the Shi*!

Anyway they have put hanging baskets and trellis on our half of the fence and when we went to do the same they put a note through the door saying that we are not allowed to do this?

From what you say, Hinksy, they agree that each of you are responsible for the fence on your right hand side. So you have been generous enough to donate some fencing to your neigbours on the left. It sounds like you will have to put something up inside the fence line.

Hinksy if you go to the land registry site Monday till Friday you can download yours and your neighbours deeds for £4 each that way you'll know for sure which is your boundary.
