i just go to wilkies and buy some for a quid, then buy another pair, cos i left the first ones in the rain.

like Amanda says, its probably for hand size, and/or thickness of stems, the big ones are bigger for bigger hands, and therefore cut bigger things

..... wow!!! sometimes i even amaze myself when my logical head pops up

I think you have to feel them - try which fits your hand best. It's a very personal thing, your own secateurs. Some people prefer the anvil type, some the parrot-beak kind. It's not a thing I'd buy on-line (unless I'd tried them at the shop and noted the model number).

I LOVE these secateurs! I have the 2 and the 4, there seems to be little difference between them. They have lasted over 10 years and last year I sent them in for 'renewal' and they came back like new!
They're expensive but I've never found any as good

We have Felco no. 2 - they are ace. We use them for lightish pruning; flower stems; 80 % of jobs really. Also have an anvil pair, but out in wet (and possibly spidery) outhouse so not checking which they are right now!

Heywayne Honey. Once you've owned a pair of Felco's, you're 'hook-lined-and-sinkered' as far as I'm concerned, which is why I miss them so much. No other secateurs have come close to feeling like an extension of my gardening arm ever since. And after handling/holding every single one in their range, Felco No. 4 fitted my hand size and shape like a glove. And simply put, that's what it's all about for me.

Thanks peoples - I just need to find somewhere that'll let me try 'em. I'm pretty sure whenever I've seen them they've been locked away behind glass...

In our case you buy the one variety made for the left handed. They're great though. Even if they are locked away (and they usually are) the assistant will allow you to have a go. Sort of like buying jewellery, but more practical.

Well, spotted the Felco stand in the local garden centre - but they were all hermetically sealed in dsiplay packs. However, looking at them and holding the handles as best I could through the packaging, I think I'm going to go for some No7's.

Well, they were delivered t'other day - I opted for the No7's (and holster sbp). I thought they were broken at first because of the swivelly handle bit, but it's great innit?

Can't wait to use them now!

Good choice, the No 7 is also my favorite such a lovely action in your hand, the next thing is to take them to pieces and put them back together again.

Knowing me I'd put them back together in such a way that when you squeeze the handle your thumb is chopped off!

I'm sure there must be something in the garden that needs pruning this weekend.....
