Managed to get to the lottie for a bit today for the first time in AGES. I was really disappointed to find my sweetcorn (formerly my pride and joy) has been demolished by something, rabbits maybe, I am gutted.

Where I am it's squirrels and there's absolutely nothing I can do to stop the little B******s. I wouldn't mind (quite) so much if they ate the whole thing, but they just strip away the bottom two or three rows from each cob then move on to the next plant. I assume that's because the plants can't bear their weight so they just take what they can reach from the ground. The one advantage is that they do seem to leave them until they are ready, rather than taking them before they're ripe, so I can sometimes beat them to it. Does anyone know if it's OK to give the squirrel damaged ones to the hens? I'm getting hens on Saturday and would like to chuck a few treats into the run, but at the same time I don't want to risk spreading disease.

Rats used to get mine ... I only found out when I took down my old shed, and found empty corn cobs underneath it

Same Lainey. My sweetcorn were growing away happily, under their netting, then got too large for it so I did what I now know to be a stooopid thing and took the netting off. Two days later, all my lovely little cobs nibbled and knawed ... its just soooo annoying isnt it. Bigger netting next year for me!

                    (((hugs))) lainey lou.
my sweetcorn was rubbish this year, and the ends all got munched by slimers and woodlice on the few cobs which looked ok, then the rain got in & rotted them! Gah!

On a more cheerful note, have you got Forth yet? (My memory is telling me that you're a Verve fan...hope I'm not just going(more) mental)

Yes, and yes! I pre-ordered the super-deluxe version with Vinyl/CD/DVD ages ago 'Love Is Noise' doesn't do justice to the rest of the album. I've heard the next single will be 'Rather Be' which is the best tune I've heard in a long time, my favourite on the album, and 'Noise Epic' is almost old-style Verve. I do love Mr Ashcroft, but he sounds so much better with Mr McCabe et al
If you go to their MySpace page (MySpace.com - The Verve) you can listen to it as a stream - keep you going til you can get it! 7Digital had the download for £5 last week too, if that's any good to you?
