  • Feel like pitching a tent at the Docs!!

Quick background of last few weeks(Sorry I've just finished writing & realised it is rather an essay!!)~Firstly My Boy had a rather nasty bout of scarlet fever,& due to it not being picked up straight away we had 3 trips to the docs in just a week.It cleared with antibiotics but a week later & we're back as he develloped a nasty rash," days later instead of the rash improving it was totally covering his body & really quite scary! So another trip to the Doctor!!
    About 3 weeks later(last Thurs)
& he was absolutely butchered by some midgies at the lottie & his head was covered in bites that he'd scratched at,took him to the chemist as I really couldn't bear the thought of yet another trip to the doc,Unfortunately the pharmacist thought differently & said to get an emergency appointment as he'd reacted really bad to the bites & it was best to get checked out!
As if I wasn't already starting to feel like a neurotic mum constantly at the doctors, over the w/e his slight exzema decided to invade the whole of his face & he also got a rash over his torso, nursery insisted that they'd rather I got it checked before he came back to nursery(just in case the rash wasn't exzema)So hey-ho hey-ho Off to the docs AGAIN!!
Getting him ready for bed last night noticed that the slight exzema on his back is now red raw from what I can only assume is an allergic reaction to the cream the doc just prescribed!!!Feel like sobbing~mainly for him as it just seems to be one thing after another for the little chap, but also starting to get so paranoid re how often we'reat the Doctors!!What really doesn't help is the comments from other mums like"ooh I can't remember the last time we went"or"we only go for emergencies"I'm sure they're well meant but just makes you feel that bit more down about it all!
What gets me the most is both kiddies were Breastfed(for quite a while),boy had no solids til he was 6months,We grow our own & they eat incredibly healthily I just think where the heck have we gone wrong!!
We're trying a dairy free diet for 6 weeks(Andi gets exzema if he has too much of the stuff). If anyone has any tried & tested natural creams that they can reccomend it would be so appreciated!!(he's 4&1/2)

Stop now - I'm sure you've done nothing to contribute to this!

I'm sure YOU haven't gone wrong as you put it - these gremlins creep into our kids lives when we least expect them and when we believe that we have done everything best-wise - OK no such word but it get the idea across?

My own son (now 22!) started eating anything and everything and I thought 'great' I've got a kid who'll eat anything without protest - however he was later to be diagnosed with food intolerances which had behavioural probs. Not my fault - what mother wouldn't be cheering at her child's acceptance of normal food? - as it took too long to spot until the experts got involved. I know what to spot in food intolerances now - as 'by default' I kinda had to 'become an expert without the training!

Just let then take a good look at your child - don't be fobbed off too quickly - a lot of docs think mothers who take kids to docs are neurotic - and if you're not satisfied - persist and at worst change docs.

Hope your little one/s get a solution v.soon.

Sorry to hear he's having such a rough time of it! Have you tried bathing him in dead sea salts for the exzema? It's supposed to be good for this and also psoriasis. Another thing is UV treatment. I imagine the exzema has flared up due to the antibiotics and other illnesses more than anything, poor lad (and poor you!).

            Poor lad- and poor you

My kids have skin allergies on their eyelids from time to time ...you try finding a cream strong enough for the 'rash' and the delicate skin.
I bought a cream for them from the health food shop which has something in it from bees. Can't quite remember what it's called but the bee stuff is called something like 'propopolis'. A decent health food shop could get you some- sorry to be vague but the info is on my English computer
            It works a treat.
Also kamillosan nipple cream helps healing and tends not to irritate the sensitive skin.
Do go back to your GP- they're pretty useless when it comes to allergies, esp with little peeps- no real research done for some crazy reason
BUT he may need different antibiotics and will need monitoring for allergic reactions to antibiotics if that's part of the problem. ( better to find out now than if ever he's unfortunate to need urgent care in hospital)
I spent years messing about with foods and never really came to a conclusion other than a sensitivity to dairy, but they still had problems even when completely removed from the diet.

(I would suggest starting with washing powder-( non Bio Persil is recommended for all skin sensitivities) .

Poor you! and poor your little lad too, lucky he's got such a great Mum.
Calendula cream is excellent stuff, actually, I think that's what's in the kamillosan cream that Nicos recommends. Boots do their own brand of calendula cream (which is made by Nelsons).

I never feel bad for taking mine to the docs, even if it turns out to be nothing (although we only go if I know there is something wrong!) It's the time issue with us that prevents me going til we have to, all that sitting and waiting in a room full of ill people is irritating.
But I always get told I did the right thing by taking them. And it's what we pay all our taxes for, to have the right to see the doctor, whether we have been twice in a week or twice in 10 years!

Hope you get the poor lad sorted. I did read up about organic / chemical free products for excema that a lot of people swear by. Sometimes changing washing powders or soaps etc can have a big impact.

totally with quark1 on this one, STOP thinking it's something YOU did, it's not.

I gave up smoking before my first one, he gets asthma and exzema.
smoked( mildly) with the second, he has nothing.
first ate everything and anything... now has some allergies to certain foods, mostly jams , second one was a fussy baby on solids, now eats stuff even i wouldn't eat and has no allergies whatsoever.
first one was breastfed, second wasn't, go figure!

all you need to know is you have done everything you can to feed him healthily, and its more likely polution and enviroment ( outside your house) plus genetics etc.

and don't worry too much, with allergies it's pot luck, they can grow out of them ( they say 7 years clear and they are over it) or you can grow into them, my mum developed hayfever for the first time at 50, never had it before and was brought up on a farm!!

Cheers All!I know deep down I shouldn't feel guilty, but I guess that's one of the negatives us mum's have to sometimes feel to kind of "pay"for all the great aspects of motherhood!Andi suffers with several allergies, reacts badly to bites & had really bad exzema as a kid(still flares up if he overdoes the dairy)& I spend my time convincing him it's not his fault, but that saying of "taking your own advice..."springs to mind!
Well we went to the doc earlier & he was actually so reassuring that I wasn't wasting his time & did the right thing taking him.New quandry!!He's prescribed oral steroids for 4 days.I've stupidly/sensibly(???)looked & read up about them & the dose is actually higher than the normal adult dose(it says on the pack they are rarely given to children, but when essential a lower dose is given).Think I'll have a chat with the pharmacist about it in the morning before giving them to him.
I did fairly recently change to Asda eco friendly laundry stuff,so will go back to the Ecos that I used to use.The doc is all for me carrying on with a dairyfree diet,he said we'll know within 6 weeks if it makes a difference.
                      Again,thanks all.Di,x

Oh poor you! Hope you're feeling a bit better. You're obviously such a terrific and caring mum, but you can't work miracles! I've been doing a bit of reading about dairy products and I'm getting more and more convinced that we should ALL be avoiding them, even organic. I think they're responsible for a lot of niggling things. I gave up milk about 4 years ago (I actually picked up a horrible lysteria thing and milk made me ill after that) and feel sooo much better for doing so. Still eat cheese though...

If it makes you feel any better, my big sis breastfed for 6 months, gives her little boy organic and lovely varied diet - everything, and he still has bouts of exzema.

Hope the pharmacist could help - PM me if not - my mum's a pharmacist as well as a passionate exponent of a GYO organic produce for babies! xxx

Di, you're right to check with the pharmacist before giving, it'll put your mind at rest if nothing else.
I swear by health kinesiology for allergies and intollerances, the therapy can tell you exactly what the allergen is and can even "switch them off" sounds crazy but it worked for my son and several others that I know.

                          some more info...

when my son was littl, we were never away from the docs either, he was breast fed for only 6 weeks, as my milk dried up, anyway, turns out he was allergic to all sorts of stuff, we found out by removing everything from his diet ....... one of the worst things was fresh orange juice, now he's now an incredibly healthy 18, can eat anything, and hasn't been to the doctors cos he's ill since he was about 8 ...... anyway regarding the eczema use only non biological washing powder, as that can cause a problem, I've tried so many things for mine, creams steroids etc ..... nothing shifts it, so i just persevere with aqueous cream and at least it helps stop some of the skin ripping.
i always use dove soap, as this doesn't affect me, but i used baby soap once for a change, and it flared up out of control.

anyway, i found some stuff on t'interweb a while back, dunno if any of it will help
