  • Farm Foods meats?

I see Farm Foods (the shop) has really cheap chicken and beef etc, does anyone know if the meat is grade A 100% British meat or is it imported stuff? For some reason I don't like the idea of buying a bunch of frozen chicken breasts in a bag for a couple of quid, just seems a bit cheap and cherful.... not had chance to go in their yet so cannot check place of origin.

I shouyld imagine that regardless as to where it was reared, welfare probably wasn't great???
Also,if welfare isn't a priority for you, very often cheap supermarket meats are bulked up with water to make it look like you're getting more...personally I think you're better off getting smaller portions of quality stuff.

Have to agree with andi&di. Cheap meat is, more often than not, cheap for a reason. That reason usually being that it has been reared using the lowest welfare standards allowable in law and has then been bulked up using, in the main, water. Meats bulked up in this way often have another animal protien (often pork) added to them in order to enable the water injected into them stay in place. Once you cook it the meat loses a lot of that water and you end up with less than you thought you were buying.

Strangely all of this is legal. Thank goodness we GYOers can be sure of what is in and on the food we produce on our plots.
It is the doom of man, that they forget.

Me too. If you want nice chicken, buy quality. If you want cheap protein, grow kidney beans

Chooks that are mass produced for these places are not happy chooks. Whenever possible I buy all my meat direct from the farmer then I know it has not been tampered with and I am getting the cheapest possible price negating the middleman for best quality.

Last week we bought a large shoulder of goat from the farm shop. Cut into 2 joints, the smaller, less meaty one did 2 of us meals for 4 days, and if we hadn't been decidedly greedy on Sunday and Monday, it would have done rather more.....
We certainly had quite enough meat to do, roast, cold roast and cottage pie for a family of 4, and still having respectable portions, but we enjoy the good stuff so much that we tend to eat lots more than we should.....

I've only ever had it curried in a West Indian style curried goat dish.

Apparently it's quite low in fat...I think???
Still never tasted it,but there's a few Halal Butchers that sell it locally. Not sure of their policies on the welfare of the animal before slaughter...I prefer outdoor reared meat.Keep meaning to go in and ask but never seem to get round to it...they're at an odd location for me...not really close nor on route to anywhere I go.

Somewhere between young mutton (or late season lamb) and venison. Low in fat (although we had a shoulder, which is a relatively fatty joint). Much richer flavour than lamb, and without that vaguely 'sweet' taste which I don't much like.
Young goat kid is more like veal in texture, but similar flavour to lamb. I don't buy that.

Farm Foods meat...isn't that a contradiction in terms?

However, they do sell After Eight icecream and some really good chunky chips......health food it isn't!

If the chance ever arises, you will taste roast goat the way I cook it, and I guarantee you will like it (but I probably won't tell you what it is until you've eaten it).
