  • European DNA Database Ruling

Just watched the report on the TV News - do you feel - like I do - that the people opposing this have something to hide? I would willingly back a compulsory national DNA database - the Ipswich Rapist was caught because his DNA was on a database - if he had been cleared of his previous charge, thanks to the do-gooders & Euro courts the DNA would have been destroyed and it would have been very difficult for him to have been brought to justice

OK - rant over, but interested to hear other grapes views

I dunno, it's a tough one. My OH was falsely accused of something, but it took til the court hearing for his accuser's story to fall apart & be thrown out by the judge. I would not be happy for his DNA to be on file because of this!

I maybe a 'freak' but the way i see this and the id cards is that, should the worse befall me or a loved one with a dna data base, hopefully there would be enough to find out who i/they was/were. Id cards, would help people like my stepson who has no driving licence or passport and not likely to be getting either in the near future, when id is needed (for picking up mail from the sorting office for instance or even to open a bank account).

Also wouldn't a dna database also help to rule out someone as a suspect for a crime.

      Hope that makes sense.

Its a bit worring all the info the government wants on us.

Compulsory id cards with biometric data.
        DNA database
A database of all our phone calls and internet activity.

I dont have anything to hide, but all that info on me can be accessed by someone with a computer is a very scary thought..

Possibly as a result of 23 years a squaddie and carrying an ID card, I dont have a problem with them. At home all Frenchies carry their ID with them, and I always have my passport with me, as its law that you must have some idenfication with you.
I think the DNA database would be a real boon to policing and keeping countries safer, and have nothing to hide from anyone, but I'm with PW on this one, not sure how happy I would be knowing that my personal life is at the end of a button to be seen by someone else.
          Its a difficult one.

Esp when they can't seem to stop losing the data on people.

The data security is only as strong as its weakest link.

The way I see it, if people are not committing crimes, then they have nothing to hide and nothing to worry about. If I was taken in for questioning and then my DNA stored, I don't think I'd have a problem with it and it would make me be a good girl, ha ha!

i agree, i've nothing to hide so wouldn't mind. but as has been mentioned, the amount of info that they do want is a concern, if it was just dna then all well and good but i don't want my every move tracking, even though i have nothing to hide.

How long before babies D.N.A. is taken at birth? And them microchipped? It's a hard question to answer.

Why are people worried about DNA databases? They don't store all of your genome on a database, as it would take too long, be too expensive, and need a shed load of harddrives to save it all. For police databases, it is like keeping finger prints: they don't store all of it, just bits of it that allow you to be differentiated from other people. They can't clone you, find medical information, or anything that people seem to be worrying about.

If you aren't worried at all about being caught doing something naughty, then why should it bother you if somone holds your details. Don't think it would bother me, but then they havent asked for them yet!

I would agree with DNA taken, but microchipping is definatley taking things a bit far - if everyones DNA was taken at birth it would certianly make people think before commiting offences

I think we are already half brainwashed into accepting all of the above. We are walking into a 1984 scenario willingly.

I was told there's a wire (tracker/aerial?) thingy in everyone's passport, so they can check your comings and goings at Air and Sea Ports. I know this is true for Civil Service and Forces personnel, so I quite believe it.

maybe if there was a dna database, your OH could have been ruled out and the real perpetrator could have been arrested and charged instead ??

i'm in favour of a compulsory DNS database for everyone, mainly because it would save a lot of police time (and therefore taxes), a lot of court time (and therefore more taxes), would help increase the conviction rates (saving even more taxes) and would help convict real offenders sooner, reducing the number of crimes they commit (and therefore the number of victims) before being caught

of course we still need to ensure that those caught and convicted are dealt with properly - no good giving them a couple of years bed and breakfast then letting them loose to do it again ....
