Thank goodness you weren't in the car and are OK. Didn't realise that unless you got the details from the other person themselves, the police wouldnt give it to you. That's awful!

the police are obligated by the Road Traffic Act to present you with the full contact details of the driver of the other vehicle. You are entitled to this information pursuant to sections 151 to 154 and section 172 of the Road Traffic Act. This supersedes the Data Protection Act

When I was hit by a car, the copper gave me the bloke's name, insurance and home address.

If you have the car registration you can find out online for a small fee.

I didn't get the details at the time from the police the driver was not capable of giving them any information, and thats what caused the problem as the information has now been processed i spent most of yesterday morning on the phone to the station and the insurance company.

I was more worried about seeing to the clients we still had to see to, I work as a home carer.

Poor you! That was such a close shave, very lucky neither of you were in the car. The real pain in the butt will be the inconvenience and the interruption to your daily life. Now that details have been sorted will you be able to get a courtesy car?

Jules I can't get a courtesy car cuase I didn't get the details and the police say they won't release the info cause of Data Protection, and the insurance company need to request the info in writing so they said it could take two weeks , My car is being lifted on Monday for assessment to see if it can be fixed, it depends on wither there is any damage underneath to the chasis.

We had got out the car two minutes before , and there had been a cyclist in front of us she stopped as she saw it happened, so if it had happened a couple of minutes earlier she would have been hit, the car that was parked in front of mind, owned by a man in the street had been picked up from the garage as their new secondhand car that evening, if my car had gone straight rather than onto the pavement his would have been hit as well, he wanted to move it very quickly!!

OMG....It takes your breath away, just how lucky you actually were. Oh it doesn't bear thinking about, it's really scary.

Can anyone at work cover your clients? Worrying about them too is going to add to your stress levels.

Fingers crossed you get it sorted out as fast as possible. Harrange your insurance company, I'm sure they can move quicker than two weeks. It also might be worth phoning CAB to get advice as I'm sure Two Sheds is right and they should be able to confirm it. Oh, and a letter to your Chief Constable might kick some butt too.

I was just going to say the same. I was hit by an un-insured driver who (after getting out to shout at me and without even checking the tiny baby she had in the front seat) fled the scene. Luckily i got the reg no from a pic I took on my phone but I had to go to the police to get her detail which they did give me 2 days later. goodluck I hope you get it sorted out soon

Drunk drivers should have their licences removed and never get them back - they (and text drivers) really really make me angry

I see your location makes it different to England as Scotland have different laws. Had this been an English Police Force you would have been able to have the details under the Road Traffic Act.

Me thinks your insurance company could work a bit faster - we pay them enough! Even if the driver is uninsured they would be able to claim back through the motor insurance bureau - we all pay a bit for things like this. Drink drivers the b******

The driver will be in the cells till he appears at court on monday, will be getting on to the insurance company during the week as need a car for my next shift starting Sat

As you said a couple of minutes earlier you would have been in the car and that doesn't bear thinking about.
