I'm happy to sign that petition as Mr Brown wasn't my choice of Prime Minister. Was he anyone's choice?

Most of the problems were caused by the banks greed by lending too much & too many dodgy loans here and in the USA.
Yes Brown was't elected as PM.
But neither were Harold Macmillan,Alex Douglas Home, James Callaghan or John Major(first term)
Another point is we don't elect a PM but a government(Party)I have always voted one way no matter who the party leader was.

If he had had the nuts to call a general when he first took over from Blair and won fair and square, I would probably be a bit more accepting of him as PM.
He hasn't, and its gone on for so long now, its just beyond a joke and besides, a joke is funny.

        I'm signing

Nope dont support him dont like him. He got in by default not elected to be PM when a PM steps down dies or whatever the deputy should only take over until an election has been held and if that person wants to stand fair enough. The sooner he goes the better.

As mentioned earlier, I vote for the party and its manifesto not the celebrity running it!

This turmoil is not Brown's fault but our own (I included) for being to greedy and wanting too much without thought on how we are to finance it in the years to come.

Hopefully this episode will bring back some good values but I doubt it!

In my area I have seen a new college, a new school to be built, our dilapidated leisure centre upgraded, crime down and most important for me better NHS treatment in the last 3 years I have never had to wait longer than 1/2 hr or more than a couple of weeks to see a specialist. Yes there is problems but that's why the old adage came into being 'You can not please all the people all of the time'.

Oh by the way I never voted for Labour last time...

Whilst not really addressing the Brown question - I'm undecided on his merits, but I'm unlikely to sign the petition as the global financial turmoil is much bigger than him - I agree with Bubblewrap. We do not vote for a Prime Minister, we vote for the government we wish to see in power, and there is (though this escapes some outspoken MP's at times of unpopular policy), collective responsibility.

I don't think Mr Brown has caused the current financial crisis, however he was Chancellorfor quite some time before he became PM, so did have oppurtunities to put some controls over banks/financial sector. BUT, as DaleClarke says, society as a whole has to take some resposibility for placing more importance on how many 'things' we own than on other values. It didn't used to be the norm for people to be in debt, except for their mortgage, you had what you could afford, and that was that.
So, I won't be signing the petition. Although I won't be voting for him in any election either...

Perhaps the current situation is not all Browns fault, but as chancellor before it he has had 12 years of unprecedented financial boom.

Why did he not mend the roof whilst the sun shined and certainly before this current downpour. Not one penny went away for a rainy day. It was all spent on one fiasco after another.

                  Prudence my arse!

whatever my thoughts on Brown, I am fairly certain he won't say this: "Oh, a petition. 657 people want me to go. I'd better get my coat then".

We have elections. We all have a vote. Use it.

                    -----------
As others have said, we all need to take responsibility for our finances. If you can't really afford a big house, then live in a smaller one, or rent one. Don't take out a mortgage 25 times your salary

                    ----------
Some retailers have gone to the wall, others will follow. It is sad for those who've lost their jobs (I lost mine in the last recession). I hope that people will now start to "be" rather than "buy". Define themselves by who they are, what they do, rather than what they own. How much cheap Chinese tat does a person need?

Maybe we'll start buying British again, to try and save some more jobs? Although I have yet to wean Mr Sheds off South African Granny Smiths, he is now drinking British beer rather than Aussie wine

We have a Prime Minister & not a President
The country did not elect TB or GB but a Labour government on it's manifesto the policies have not changed just the man at the top.
As I mentioned before this has been done by both the Labour & Conservative parties.
To force a General Election after a leadership change would require a change in electoral law.
I was a member of the Labour Party 1978 - 2005 when I left I am no longer politically active.

The man is inept and a liar.
He should never have been Chancellor let alone PM. During one of the UK's greatest times of growth he borrowed and spent money that wasn't his to falsley inflate the economy (which was doing quite nicely by itself anyway). His constant anti 'boom and bust' rhetoric was a lie. The UK should have been in a very good position to weather the inevitable global storm, but Brown has put paid to that with his ego. The UK is currently in debt to a tune of approx £106,000 per man woman and child and he intends to borrow more. He has never encouraged the prudence he claimed to practice. Savers are increasingly penalised and he has single handedly stuffed the value of the pound with his recklessness. The UK should be the safe place that international organisations could put their money, it is not.
The country elected the Labour party on the basis (rightly or wrongly) of the policies laid out buy Tony Blair, Gordon Brown does not share those policies. He is a weak and selfish man who will not call a General Election until he is sure he will win it.

edit - I feel I should add that this is just my personal opinion!!

I actually have a lot of time for Gordon Brown - to say that the current global problem is his fault is just ignorant. To say that he should have put greater restrictions on banking practices isn't practical - given that financial organisations work on a global scale these days, he cannot legislate for all the actions that are taken within the banking system - hence the problems in America effecting everyone as they have. I think Gordon Brown (if memory serves me correctly) did try to install greater controls many years ago but was unable to get agreement from other nations needed to make it work.

Yes, debt is high, but compared to other "power" nations (G8-G20 or whatever they're called), our level of debt is less than say Germany, Italy, the US, Japan and so on.

Given the alternatives, I think he's done a pretty good job and I won't be signing.

Blame is a word bandied about far to much in our society - we're all so eager to find someone to blame, yet very few people will accept blame themselves.
