  • Do you eat things past the use by date?

Wifey made a sponge cake with lemon curd (Victoria but no jam!)

Jar of lemon curd says to use within 6 weeks- think it's been open in fridge probably about 8 weeks?

Have two preggo guests coming... Reckon its safe? (shop bought curd so assuming it's pasteurised)

    Thanks!

Eyes, nose and mouth test.....Does it look ok ie no funny white bits, does it smell ok and does it taste ok......I'm pretty sure it won't have fresh eggs in like you'd make yourself and its been kept in the fridge....

I eat loads of stuff that is past it's "sell by". My daughters regularly clear my fridge and cupboards and it really annoys me. If it smells OK then it should be fine to eat.

            Mr TS does
The worst he's had is frozen fish 12 months past its sell by ... he was fine, didn't even notice

Yes, all the time. No problems at all. Sniff, see, taste. Food doesn't magically go off at a certain date

When I was little do you know we even used to keep open jam in a cupboard, never went anywhere near a fridge & I don't think they'd heard of 'sell by/use by' dates! I'm still here.
I would think it's fine especially as it wouldn't have fresh eggs probably as it 'bought', you could check the jar label just to be sure if you still have it & if you're still worried mention it to the expectant visitors. If they turn it down more lovely cake for you!

Only thing I wouldn't eat past its date is fish, everything else I eat without even thinking to look at the date.

Shop bought lemon curd! sacrilege (sp) if want a recipe just say it is really the easiest thing in the world, and you won;t have any left after 8 days let alone 8 weeks.

Oh yes! I leave stuff in the freezer for years. And eat stuff past sell by date, as long as it looks/smells/tastes OK. I don't like eating fruit when it goes too soft, but then it goes in the blender to make smoothies

                          Waste not, want not!

Then again though, I'm vegan so there is practically nothing I could eat that could make me sick without me knowing it was off, unlike meat/dairy which can be deceptive.

Yes, although it depends what it is...for example my OH's blue stinky cheese, cant tell if its off or not. Also my DD's yoghurty things, I dont keep them if they are out of date, as they are not in the fridge once at school.
Like everyone says its a taste/smell test first.
