  • Digging direction

Never occurred to me until someone pointed out today that I dig in a very set way.

I dig left to right and when I have got to the end of the row I am digging, I walk back to the left and repeat the process. Watching others it is apparent that they dig in alternate directions.

Just curious how those of you that still dig approach it?

I dig the same way. Being left-handed may have something to do with it.
I work very hard so please don't expect me to think as well!

Depends what mood I am in. Grumpy/angry/full of energy, I walk back and start again (left to right), if I am a bit pathetic/ poorly/ lacking motivation I dig back and forth

Edit: Ignore that. That is forking. Proper digging I am left to right.

I write left to right, therefore I dig in the same way - or I would do if I was a digger
Actually, if I was a digger, I'd probably go round in circles

Don't do it often, but when I do - it's left to right and the next row right to left and repeat 'til done.

Thinking about it I dig from left to right. I don't dig in constant lines I prefer to dig in blocks. I get bored digging in straight lines all the time.

I start one side of a bed and dig towards the right (away from the house and towards the brambles). Then I go back and start at the beginning on the other side, but this time I'm going towards my left (but still away from the house and towards the brambles).

Very occasionally, I finish one side and then just start at the end and work from the brambles back towards the house. In which case, I'm still going towards the right. But I don't often do that because my beds are so long that I can't do a whole one in one go. So to have any sense of progress, I do a bit one side and then a bit the other...

I hope I got that right!

                      I tend to dig downwards.

Hopefully never be in a position where I have to dig upwards.

Hehe, same direction as my last "bit" of digging - but then, I was emptying out my new semi-raised beds prior to lining with weed barrier fabric and refilling with a mix of what came out, manure and decent topsoil.

I remember thinking when I was about halfway done that I was glad I'd retired and hadn't decided to reskill as a grave digger. What I was doing was hard enough and I wasn't going down half as far as those chaps do.

I don't have any order I dig the bit that's nearest to me starting on the left or the right side I don't mind,I'm all over the shop sometimes & then I meet areas together,I'm a nightmare actually I do that when cutting the grass, start off on one side & go right round to the other side ignoring the middle section (square lawn) then meet both areas together, its nice when both areas meet

I used to dig left to right then start a new row the same, Mrs B on the other hand has been known to dig around and eventually dig herself onto an island. Glad we've gone no-dig
