  • Darling Pod not well - hope I'm doing the right thing...

    Dear Aunts and Uncles

    Jessica has been fretful since last Friday and was inconsolable Monday night and all yesterday. When I checked her before kids and I ate tea she was the same but 15 mins later she had a raging temperature. I of course compared her to Isobel who was right next to her and she was buring up. Rang Doctors just as they were closing and I was advised the on-duty doc would call back. That 3/4 hour was longest of my life as I busied myself with stripping her down, trying to control Bashfull and ringing a friend to be on standby if needed to babysit. Doc advised me to call out of hours as she couldnt come but to give her paracetamol even though she is only 7 weeks. I was asked to bring her in, which I did as soon as friend arrived. She was calmer and cooler by the time we saw the doc so was given all clear with indications of what to keep an eye on. I tried to settle her in just a vest to keep temp down but she wouldnt sleep unless she was on me and I didnt move her at all then when we awoke (all stiff with cramp!) at midnight and she was hot again I gave her some more calpol and we must have drifted off again. When I awoke again at 2am she was buring up and crying like she was in awful pain so I took her vest off and changed her nappy as a distraction whilst I assesed her further. She was then sick but it had colour and I thought "wha"??- how can it have colour so I turned the light on and it was pink. My first thought was that it was blood so I am afraid I paniked and called 999. Then (sure some of you guessed it ) as I talked to them I realised it was in fact a dribble of calpol. Was so so embarased BUT they were concerned enough to send an ambulance. Thasnkfully the driver (all 7ft of him! - just like HW) managed to pacify her and as I had striped off her vest she was cooler too so we were given the all clear but again with what to keep an eye on and a suggestion we got a docs appt today. I did ring at 8am and got an appt for 10:20 but to be honest she is so much better today and is fast asleep in her pram. I feel that having not slept for 36 hours sleep is the most important thing right now so I cancelled the appt BUT I have asked for a phone call from the doc to see what her opinion is. I do so hope I've done the right thing and I dont regrat cancelling if she goes downhill again later

    Here for a chat and support for a little while if anyone has time for us.

    Goodness! How worrying and stressful for you and the family...

    Glad she seems a bit more normal now. Maybe they should change the colour of Calpol so it's not pink - maybe a lime green would help???

    Will you be able to catch up on your sleep later today?

      Oh Tam, you must have been out of your mind with worry. I don't have children, but know how I react when a family member or pet is poorly. I think you did everything you could last night, I think I may have been inclined to keep today's GP appointment, just to talk it through with someone face to face, but I can see why you have changed it to a phone call instead. I hope she continues to improve, ((((((((((((((((((BIG HUGS)))))))))))))))) and lots of love to all of you.

          Its horrible Becks, being in two minds - reckon Doc may fit us in if she is concerned. Think its the thought of getting the two in the car in this weather and the idea I MAY have been able to have a sleep which finaly made up my mind.

            For what it's worth I think you made the right call. If she is feeling better not much point in dragging her out to docs. It is scarey how fast little ones can go up and down when they are ill.

            Mind you not sure about changing calpol to lime green, can you imagine how freaked you would have been with luminous green sick?

                Big (((((hugs))))) Tam, and gentle hugs for Pea & Pod
                I think you did the right thing honey, if she is sleeping that is going to be the most healing thing for her. If the Calpol was bringing down her temp, then the docs are unlikely to actually DO anything other than send you back home and tell you to keep her cool and give her the Calpol etc. If she stops taking fluids, or the Calpol & tepid sponging isn't controlling her temp, that's the time to worry, in my experience.
                Bless you all, and I hope that you manage to get a bit of rest today. xxx

                      UPDATE;

                      I have just spotted some fluid coming from her ear and so have rung for another appt at 1:40. Funny I dont regret cancelling the first one like I thought I would as she has now had a decent sleep.

                        Poor love. Sounds like she may have an ear infection or something which would explain the temperature and the pain. Big hugs and I hope the doc finds the cause so they can treat it for her.

                          Tammy you have done the right thing, make sure she also drinks cooled boiled water as this will help keep her fluids up and bring her temp down. I once had to spoon feed one of my sons water to get him to keep it down and get him to drink. Unless the doc gives her anything else to take, not a lot more you can do. Sleep is the best as long as you keep an eye on her.
                          Big hugs to you and your babies.
