  • Daddy Long Legs

As far as I am concerned the spiders with the small bodies and long legs are a daddy long legs and have called them this since I was a child but her indoors calls crane flies daddy long legs.
Could this be a Townie/Country thing, any one else have similar observations?

'Fraid I have to agree with her indoors...crane flies=daddy long legs!
Not sure if I'm a townie/country - live in fields but only 20 miles to London? What are you Cloud?

      I'm with the crane-fly brigade.

Long-legged spiders are Harvestmen where I hail from.

Mange tout, I've been called it several times during my lifetime!

Cloud,I think you might be right,BUT I've always called(&always will)craneflies Daddy longlegs, country gal thru&thru dont know if that makes a difference?becoming a kinda townie in my 20's I'd never heard of a billywitch which noone could believe;not sure if it cos brought up calling them something different or if they just never ventured out to the sticks?

Crane flies here too. Be aware the larvae of these are known as leatherjackets (c. inch long dirty brown maggot things) and will much their way through small roots - I lost a lot of seedlings to these critters last year.

So do my chickens! I think I just had a really bad infestation of them last year and because I had just moved, it was too late to do much about them. Live and learn!

I'm on your side, Clould, but that may be just because I am a stupid American. A Daddy Long Legs is a Daddy Long Legs Spider and a Crane Fly is a just a Crane Fly.

When I was growing up both the described spider and fly were known as daddy longlegs.

I am irrationally terrified of the flying variety but am quite at home with the ground based alternative! I know full well that neither can hurt me - its just the thought of one getting caught up in my hair or dangling in the air in front of me.....ooohhhhhhaaa....perishing shivers up my spine just thinking about them (the crane fly that is)!

Well saw a quiz on TV a few months ago and the answer agreed with what I said but her indoors still disagreed.
