The river Trent is lovely, I know because I have walked on it for 18 years.

What I don't understand is, why go to so much trouble to grow it here (BTW I've seen it in fields a few times, and recognised it) rather than buy the crop where people grow it because it is the ONLY cash crop they CAN grow?
If it is so complex extracting the stuff from the seed pods, how come animsl raiding the crop are getting high?
In Victorian times there were 'opium dens' where the addicts smoked what I assume was an unrefined form of the drug.
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

Opium is quite easy to extract from the seed heads in small quantities but how it's done in large amounts I don't know.
Refining it into morphine/heroin is quite complicated.

In the poppy fields of Afghanistan its all done by hand. The blokes would be in the fields with a razor blade and a flat bladed knife, and spend all day collecting it.
Labour being cheap, and machinery not being a viable option, its the easiest way to collect out there.

It is strange that it is perfectly legal to grow opium poppies in the UK but it's illegal(heavy fine or jail for posession.)to harvest it.

I don't think our climate gives a very good yield of opiates anyway. Waste of time trying I suspect. Maybe they've got a better strain than the one in my garden!

The ones in my garden go over three feet & have many flowers.
