  • Computer crash

For a few days my PC has been telling me that a systems file had to be recovered. Today the config/sys file exploded completely, blast it! I am using OH's PC at the moment, but it's not the same, and I'm facing the possibility of having to use the system recovery disk and losing all my files - which have not, of course, been backed up for yonks if at all.

    Learn from my mistake and

    BACK UP YOUR FILES NOW!

A timely reminder Anna - thanks. But I'm embarrassed to ask this - how do I back up my files?

There is a way you maybe able to save the files from your hard drive, but it may cost you a few pounds to do it, unless someone you know has one. See if you can get hold of an external hard drive case to suit your computers 3 1/2" hard drive, unplug and remove the hard drive from your computer and fit into the external case. Then it's just a matter of reading the hard drive on other half's computer and burn the files you want to disk. Replace the hard drive when finished and reinstall Windows etc.

I'm lost already, Mcsee - I have my trusty lappie here and I don't know how to remove its hard drive and I would shudder to do such a thing. I think I'm going to have to go to my local corner 'puter repair shop for this one. Sigh - more things to worry about.

Jeanie, if you turn your lappie over, there will be a couple of panels with screws in, that look as if they unscrew.
Unscrew them, and one of them will reveal what looks like a silver bar of choccy, although sadly it isnt. If you gently pull it (the direction to pull it generally is self evident) it just pops out.
Take that to the comp shop, get a case that fits it, along with a usb lead and Robert becomes your fathers brother etc etc.

I know this cos a mate of mine did it for me just recently.

Now I understood that, Bob! Sadly this could get expensive - I have 2 lappys and one PC!

Yer, me too! You can back-up your files on-line for nowt. Will have a scout round and find out, but Plaxo springs to mind, and I'm sure BT do sommat too. I seem to remember my dad using one.

As for the warning, thanks, but you are a year too late!!!!!!!

I already have a separate hard disk with all my files stored on, and my 2 year-old Mac that I just bought came with another, so I'm going to copy everything on to that one to! "Belt and Braces' if you like.

Once bitten, twice shy, I've already lost hundreds of irreplaceable holiday and animal pictures. Also, if you use Outlook or similar BACK IT UP!

                      Ah Jeanie,
The way I described was for when the comp has died and you want to save stuff from your hard drive.
Backing up files is something I do not often enough, but I have an external hard drive that I save stuff to. As the birthday girl says, Plaxo do an online back up service too. Other providers are available.

Use something like photobucket or picassa to store your pictures online . Then if your computer goes bang when you get it sorted or replaced your picture are waiting for you when you log back on again. I learned that lesson through bitter experience- I hadn't backed up in a few months and one night while I was quietly minding my own business my hard drive exploded.Tip 2 don't remove the side panels from your computer - they stop hot, sharp fast moving stuff getting out as well as stopping you from getting in and touching the wrong things.
Another option use USB memory sticks/flash drives to back up your important pictures and docuements . You can then either restore them to the original computer or put them on another.

There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who won't anymore and who always will. Don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it in your future.

If you're not in Anna's position, i.e. your PC hasn't gone bang yet, just buy yourself a cheap external USB hard drive and copy what you care about to that regularly.

Jeanie - My reference to removing the drive was directed at Anna, but it is a sure fire way to retrieve your data if system files become corrupt.

If your computer is fine and you want to back up what's on your hard drive and your laptops or home PC have a DVD or CD burner, just copy all your important files and photo's to a disk. Do this regularly.

Depending on which file is missing if you search on google and you know the name of the file, you can print off instructions for how to restore it.If it is windows xp it involves putting the windows disc in and when prompted it asks you to repair. The instructions tell how to delete the corrupted file then copy the new one from the disc. Then reboot and all your emails and pictures will be where you left them.It will be similar instructions for vista.Hope this helps
