Composting loo - anyone got one near Oldham?

The one that springs to mind alldigging is Natsol, they've done a number on allotment sites. Not sure if they have someone in your area to answer questions though.

Sorry I can't give any help - I haven't a clue, but would love to learn more about composting toilets, if anyone who has one would post some information.

Me Miss 'puts hand air'

We've got a Rotaloo Composting toilets RotaLoo saves water & cant recommend it highly enough. Its fantastic no smell or anything & funnily enough we emptied it for the first time yesterday (Installed in May 2011) & I was very aprehensive about it but there was nothing it had composted all the solids & loo paper - Amazing.
You put an accelerator in (we dont do it as much as we should because we forget!) & a scoop of sawdust after each use and thats it - bloody fantastic. & no I'm not affiliated with anything or anyone to do with the Company.

If anyone wants to come & visit you're more than welcome we'll even bake cakes

I've had several designs described to me by John 'Compost' Cossham in York. The simplest is one he uses at home which is a basic sawdust loo system that's emptied into compost bins.
The compost bins sit for at least 3-4 years by which time they should be lovely compost.

I've been reading the humanure book too. It's fascinating!

The worries people have expressed have been rats (We'll wire mesh the bins so nothing can get in) and the smell. If the system smells you've not covered it up enough so adding more sawdust or other covering material should sort that out quickly.

John also recommends slightly composted sawdust that's damp too as it blocks smells more effectively and seals them in, as well as having more friendly bacteria in to starts the composting process.

He's used his for 10 years!

Composting loos are brilliant but you need to be sure that there is someone who is prepared to empty them when the time comes!

That'll be me! I've been told it's not worse than a baby's nappy. There is at least one other person willing to do it.

I've cleaned up some pretty gross things whilst I was a caretaker too so I'm pretty certain there'll be nothing more horrid than than I've dealt with then.

On a similar tack, I'm using an ordinary dalek as a dog poo composter ~ it works incredibly well, isn't smelly and doesn't attract flies.
I pick up the poops with a trowel, and wrap them in newspaper, fish n chip style: it's then dropped in the dalek along with the usual kitchen scraps & peelings.
The newspaper is important for keeping the flies down: they can't lay eggs in the poop if it's covered up.

Hi,

I'm Committee Secretary for an allotment site in St Helens which has a Natsol since April 2012. You are welcome to come and have a look if you can't find a site closer. We viewed both a Kazubaloo installation & Natsol installation but we went with the Natsol and have had no problems.

I just goggled "Oldham compost loo" and got this:

does that mean anything to you? (it might just be nonsense)

Honestly I was dreading emptying ours and it was not at all a horrible job. Just slid the bin out (obviously wearing gloves!!) and tipped the contents out which had composted - no identifying matter whatsoever

no smell, no flies....
