  • Cold winter = less bugs???

They say a cold winter kills the garden bugs, have you found this to be the case?

I have more than ever this year!!!!!!

Do u mean germ bugs or garden bugs?

I've been very lucky with germs so far this year thankgoodness - had mine at the start of the year.

However, have noticed shed loads of black-fly & eariewigs this year. Down on butterflies but up on bees!

We have not had much carrot root fly but that could be the ground is so hard they couldn't bury into the soil, there was a bit of pea moth but only about 1 in 20 peas affected.

No, it's a load of crepe. Ridiculous amound of black fly white fly and now mealy aphids - vile things - the white fly were all snuggled up in the sprouts last winter and point blank refused to die. I was thinking of hoovering them until the veterean who gives us stuff and thinks nothing of spraying, laying mouse traps and slug pellets had the cheek to tell me it was cruel and asked how I would like to be sucked up a tube.

Anyway at least there are fewer wasps and cabbage whites than last year and I swear I've never seen so many ladybirds not to mention the ladybird porn. They valiantly took control of the black fly on the runners bless them.

I have had a bit of blackfly but on one plant I counted 10 ladybirds, I have loads of bee's but then I have hollyhocks in the garden and at the plot, apart from that not much of anything else. I have a frog or two that visit's my plot even though I dont have a pond, there is a stream at the back but very low on water, so not many slugs / snails.
For this part of the country it has been very dry.
