Thanks for that Nicos. Sadly I don't qualify (get too much pension - what a joke!)

Last year after the cold snap us pensioners (and I suppose other qualifiers) got an extra cold weather payment of £60 which was paid in the middle of January. Has anyone heard whether we will be paid a similar amount this year? The weather has been worse this year up to now so I hope so.

It's not just pensioners that qualify, 'carers' and their dependants do too - I got a letter this morning to say £25 is on it's way. I've put the fan heater on!
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

Me and OH do not qualify because we are both gainfully self employed and pay taxes. In other words we are contributing to the so called kitty but there is no way we can a little bit out. My Oh is 80 soon and is very proud that he has always supported himself. I suppose we should be grateful that we have enough without handouts. I am not too sure though.

I have worked full time and paid taxes for the last 25 year, until I recently got made redundant. A cold weather payment would have been nice, but instead me and my son will sit here in the cold.

Errrr... handouts? Or perhaps payments from a government that attempts to be socially responsible and acknowledges that heat is one of the basics of life? As it goes, I'm currently not that high up the Money Tree but when I was, I was very happy for a few pence of my taxes to go towards keeping those a little less fortunate warm and fed!

If I didn't qualify then I wouldn't have the heating on just now, I'd be relying on the woodstove alone - but I can't help but feel it is wrong that I qualify and others like Jillyreeves, Brengirl and Ladylottie don't get, even though they have no doubt contributed more taxes.
The first time I got this payment I phoned the Benefits folkies to query which of the "pensioners, pregnant women and disabled" entitled in their letter I was ! (Being a youngish male.)

i've had one payment from 17th to 24th december .... and now when i really could do with it, nothing .... the problem is you only get it if it's 0 or less for 7 days on the trot ... one warmer day and no payment, so basically i sit here under a duvet and occasionally relent when i can't stand the pain from the cold ... and put the heating on .. and hope i don't run out of gas .... so for those who whinge about people getting 'handouts' try sitting in the cold, in one room with a crappy gas fire... under your duvet with 3 layers on a hat scarf and gloves ... when it's -12 outside, cos you aren't sure if you're gonna get a payment or not ...

till it arrives, after it's been below freezing all week ... and you can't afford the extra gas in case it doesn't

                        sorry rant over lol

I'm in the same boat as you Jilly (But without the son), I worked from leaving school in 1979 up to a few month's ago when I was made redundant, I always saved my money, Which I might add I had to live off until they were low enough to go cap in hand for some money and now I'm on JSA of £64.30 a week, the ONLY bill I get help with is the council tax, all the others I still have to pay, I have pre payment meters in and when it gets sub zero out side most of my money goes on keeping warm. A cold weather payment would be very gratefully accepted, but not being a pensioner, single mum or registered disabled, I've got more chance of platting snot, it would also be nice if we all got the £200 all pensioners get to wards there winter bills, some say they don't need it or they don't want it, but you don't see them queuing up giving it back.

                          Rant Over.

Not all disabled/ill people get it, only those on DLA.

If you're suffering from cancer, for example, or have a disability that doesn't include your legs, you get nothing extra. You're still poor, you're still cold, but if you can't tick the right boxes, you get nada.

Do you qualify for the Cold Weather Payment? from Carers.org
