    cleaning gold

    I have inherited a lovely ring, but it has been away in a box for a good number of years (over 40 I should think), and half of the ring has become tarnished.
    Does anyone have any good tips for cleaning this up, or is it best done by a jeweller?

    Does it have a stone in? If so you may need to proceed with care, depending on the stone. I seem to remember soaking gold in gin helps!

      Yes it has 3 diamonds in.

        I would take it to the Jeweller and let them clean it, you may damage the setting otherwise.

          Try soaking it in an eggcup of gin first - the diamonds will come to no harm and will sparkle for Christmas! When I had a diamond ring, this is what I used.

              Coke cleans copper coins (used to demonstrate its corrosive properties!)

                Diamonds should be resistant to most things..it's the gold you need to look after!..diamonds eh??..lucky you!!

                    A friend's mother worked for a very good jeweller in Nottingham, and confessed that when people brought their jewellery in for cleaning, they used a soft toothbrush and baby toothpaste...

                      Another vote foe toothpaste here (although I use whatever is in the bathroom and not the baby stuff)

                        Wood ash and a soft tooth brush is supposed to be gentle enough, an antiques dealer told me We use it to clean the glass door on the wood burner - comes up a treat.
                        Life is too short for drama & petty things!
                        So laugh insanely, love truly and forgive quickly!

                          Gin is good for cleaning rings, vodka doesn't work though - tried it once when no gin and it was a total waste of a good drink!

                          Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

                            I took mine to a jewelers and they cleaned it while I did my shopping then I picked it up, only cost me £2.
                            Looked like new after
