  • Chilli+fingers+eye= OUCH!

Ok, I'm not silly enough to prepare chillis for cooking without taking precautions...

However, it appears I am stupid enough to take some of BarleySugar's saved chilli seed, transfer to a new envelope and then 20 minutes later rub my eye...

    Oh My Gosh!!!

And the worst bit was they were Dorset Naga, Scotch Bonnet, Peruvian Purple and Choc Habanero

Cue pain, streaming eyes, a stumble to the bathroom etc....

    Ouch, ouch, ouch!!

I honestly didn't think that a dried chilli seed could be this bad!!

oooh painful! I was silly enough last week to prepare chillis for cooking without wearing gloves. Despite washing my hands afterwards, they were burning for a least 4 hours and had to put sudocrem on in the end to ease it!!!

Ouuuuuuch, that's what I say. I did the same when I was sorting mi chilli seeds out for swaps on Monday. But mine was an itchy nose...well ya can guess the rest , mine were Trinidad Scorpions, Dorset Naga, Naga Morich & Bhut Jolokia...I really don't recommend messing with the seeds unless you have protection on your hands, and definitely don't scratch anything.

I have to say that I do know your pain.

I've been oven drying Chilli's and grinding them to get chilli powder and the other day I stupidly blew on the grinder to clear some of the dust out thinking my glasses would protect me.

All I can say is no wonder the Indian Police are looking at the Naga Jolokia as a none lethal weapon.

You know the scene in There's Something About Mary where Adam Sandler traps a certain part of his anatomy in his zipper? That's heaven compared to extra hot chilli dust in the eye.

        Thank god for cold water.

I did this yesterday as well but didn't realise until I was in the shower. I washed my hair and as the suds ran down my face the stinging began in my eyes and round my lips. I couldn't see and flummoxed around like an agitated hippo. Not a pretty sight lol.

As it happens the last time I did it I ended up the next day at A&E and had my eyes washed out (not literally)

It took me 3 or 4 handwashes with a swarfega type 'scrubby' product before I was safe to touch my eyes/face again.... I'm still not totally convinced it's all gone!

They say if you eat a V.hot chilli and it 'burns' then eat some yoghurt- helps put out the 'fire'
Would this help sooth the pain in other areas that have been caught out by chilli fingers?

It should help, Capsaicin, the chemical that causes the heat in Chillies, isn't water soluble, but is fat soluble. So milk, yoghurt, cream should all help wash it away.

Once is allowed but don't make a habit of it.

As long as they don't put it back to the fridge it's fine

Soooooo sorry; the chillies are lethal. I can't beat the comments so far, though son No 1 said putting the yog back in the fridge might be OK as long as no 'extras' were included. I don't know what my food safety officer would say to that though
